My name is Saad Hashmi, and I'm the founder & editor of Windows Phone Daily. It's a growing Windows Phone blog that covers everything from the hottest news and latest handsets to the growing and improving app selection in the Marketplace. Check it out at WindowsPhoneDaily.com.
When it comes to me, I'm just a 19-year old student in Southern California trying to make something of his life. One day I hope I'll reach a Verge-like level of awesome with a site, but in the meantime WPD is what I love.

Oh and Tom, you really couldn’t come up with an original article title? You just rephrased Ars Technica’s title as a question :P

I know this sucks for some devs who can’t transition away from the desktop just yet, but imo this is good riddance. At least the option still exists for those who want it, but Microsoft SHOULD be doing anything and everything to make sure Metro is the priority.

Make sure you check out the Nokia Collection in the Marketplace. That’s where Nokia Maps, Drive, and Transit are. Also Creative Studio is really useful for panorama photos and as a free photo editor. Now on to the fun stuff…
*Verge app – Le Verge is the best one I’ve seen and I’m assuming you want one ;-)
*Facebook app – Official one is actually really good
*Twitter app – Carbon or Rowi
*Tumblr app – Blueprints
*News app – Too many but my faves are USA Today, News360, The Daily Beast and TIME. Also if you use Google Reader get Nextgen Reader. Easily the best GR app out there.
*Browsers – All of them are based on IE so no difference, but SurfCube is easily the coolest.
*Music app – ‘Lyrics’ detects what song is playing and gives you lyrics, AlbumFlow gives a cover flow-esque UI
*YouTube app – Your best bet is SuperTube since MetroTube is gone. Another good one is PrimeTube.
*Games – Must-haves are Wordament for word gaming, ARMED! for strategy (and good graphics), The Harvest for RPG/action, and maybe Radiant Defense if you want a tower defense game.
*Random stuff – Prime TV for keeping track of tv shows, Reinstaller if you ever need to reinstall apps to your phone after a hard reset, Tango/Skype for video calling, Thumba for photo editing, VEVO for music videos (U.S. only I think), “Weather” by Microsoft which is the best free Weather app imo and WP Shortcut Tiles for shortcuts to Wi-Fi/Data/Airplane/other.

I tried out the Consumer Preview for a couple of days and found that I spent most of my time in Metro. I was surprised that I actually felt a lot more productive in that experience compared to the desktop, simply because it’s just a better overall product than Windows 7.
The instant type to search is just awesome, semantic zoom makes jumping to different apps easy, charms really does improve productivity for me tenfold, and I’ve even grown accustomed to the left-side multitasking though it still feels a little unnatural.
I really thought Metro would limit me but once you get used to the way it works going back to the traditional desktop is the one that starts to feel more limiting. It feels like going from a dumbphone to a smartphone, or from a Mac to an iPad. It’s just a radically different experience that you need to orient yourself with first before realizing its true potential.

Agreed. After using Windows Phone for some time, using Metro is kind of a relief to use compared to how mindnumbing some user interfaces can get. Information overload is useful, but it’s not a friend.

How are the MVNOs slowing down Sprint when they already offer unlimited data anyway?

Yeah I was just about to say that Sprint trumps T-Mobile in coverage. Now the network speed on the other hand is a completely different issue and T-Mo makes Sprint look even more outdated than people think it is.

I thought all Android phones have had that. My sister’s HTC Aria (yeah, that long ago) has the same screen too. I guess it’s HTC-only.

Sony is a MASSIVE corporation, and Sony Pictures in particular is very detached from the mothership.

Depends on which actor Sony can grab. Ashton Kutcher definitely looks the part and he’s a good actor when he wants to be, but I agree that Sorkin’s version will probably be better.
