1) BlackBerry has spent a lot of time and money developing and pushing their new BlackBerry 10 operating system.
2) BBM is one of the few features left that was keeping people on BlackBerry.
Therefore, why would BlackBerry expand availability for the thing keeping people on its platform? It’s obvious that BlackBerry believes the other features of BB10 are compelling enough on their own to convince people to stay with BlackBerry and to switch from other platforms. Whether they are correct or not remains to be seen, but that doesn’t change the underlying rationale for this move.
In light of this, I’m curious to know (since I’m genuinely confused about your statement) what was your reasoning for:

Well, to be fair it’s really not all of my friends. I only real care about free messaging the 3 Canadian friends I still keep in touch with since moving to the States and being able to video chat with my fiancée’s developmentally disabled sister who only has an iPod Touch. Everyone else I can just SMS. Don’t think it’d be that hard to convince 4 people to switch.
