I didn’t even think about it, I just saw the demo and took it at face value and thought it was the solution to all my problems, then Nilay had to go and ruin my fantasy.

And when I buy a book I’m just temporarily licensing a copy of the human language readable mental data transmission language, right? I know the legal argument I just think it’s a crap legal maneuver to try to put digital goods in their own category and rob the consumers of their protections.

Yeah, that’s bullshit. That’s exactly the abstraction I’m talking about, there’s no reason to say that. A video game disk is a physical object and even if you insist that it isn’t since you can transfer it without making copies it is probably still subject to first sale.

Usually with physical disks you at least get a few installs and that system is at least ostensibly to prevent piracy, not stop resales. Also that system is really easy to bypass thanks to piracy…

How about for the gradual erosion of consumer rights and the doctrine of first sale . This question has been settled long ago, if I buy a physical object I get to sell it, case closed. Them circumventing this with ridiculous activation fees is, hopefully, criminal.

Google may be an internet company but phone integration is far from the universality of the internet. Google does Gtalk in the US because they can, probably something to do with the legal framework and contracts for call origination and call termination that are available to them. They lose money on the service, you can’t expect them to go out of their way to negotiate contracts in 200 countries just to lose more money.

For NYC it’s in beta so you still pay the cabbie directly so there might not be any fee worked in, but from looking at the screenshots there is a $1.50 “Hailo Fee” as to whether the rates themselves are higher I don’t know.

Team Fortress 2, probably the most hours I’ve ever sunk into a game and I only really play 2 or 3 maps, there are a ton of them now should I ever get bored of my current favorites.

I played Mass Effect 2 without ever playing one and never really got into it, I probably gave up about a quarter of the way through it. I played all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed Witcher 2, I never played the first one.

Your results may vary, keep in mind they only have one receipt printer, cash drawer, and barcode scanner listed as compatible, the cash drawer and printer are each $200 and the barcode scanner is $100 (from here ) That totals out to $796. And yes, really. The receipt printer they list as compatible over Ethernet is the same as the one that works with the stand, with a network interface rather than just usb. It’s about $40 more than the usb version ($240) and the cash drawer is $100 so that’s $340 for the both vs $697 for the stand, printer, and drawer. But as an owner of a 3d printer I can assure you, buying something is always less of a hassle than 3d printing it, it’s not always cheaper though, depends how much your time is worth I guess.

You can already do all that with the square ipad app, it interfaces with receipt printers, kitchen ticket printers, barcode scanners, and cash drawers over wifi/ethernet. Does it say somewhere that the dock has physical ports? It doesn’t look like it to me in the pictures but physical ports would vastly expand the compatible hardware.

I second textbooks, a DX size color kindle would be wonderful for e-textbooks, color diagrams are often essential, especially for science and engineering manuals.

Sales tax, in my state at least, is collected quarterly so that’s 4 checks per state per year. Some of which might not even be for enough to cover the cost to send it.

I sell things online and let me tell you a little about what you have to go through just to collect sales tax in state. First off, tax rates can vary by town, not county, not zip code, town. That’s easy, you might say, just look up your town’s rate and enter it into your ecommerce system, no problem, right? Oh no, did I forget to mention that the tax rate depends on the town of the shipping address of your customer? And if they use a PO Box that doesn’t count as the delivery addres? But of course NY provides an easy open api for you to do an address look up and figure out the correct tax amount on the fly, right? Haha nope, fuck you, do it by hand, because that’s practical with an online business. I don’t know enough about the whole streamlined sales tax thing to say if it’ll be enough to solve the problem but even just having 50 sales taxes to have to collect and file is an insane burden on businesses.
