Your analogy fails because hula hoops are a successful consumer product ;)
To be clear – they are excited at its potential as a product that they would use in their daily lives.

A few notes from a current Explorer:
-Google (at I/O) has announced a native “Glass SDK” that will allow developers to do a lot more than what the Mirror API currently allows – think native Android apps that can hook into the unique hardware capabilities of Glass. They’ve said it’s coming “soon,” but that’s all.
-I believe that the official Facebook app does notify you of comments on your photos. I have to check again if it lets you reply to them as well, but I think it does
-Viddy is another app by a “major brand” that you didn’t mention. Works as advertised – shares videos to the service. They were very quick to get this app out.
-Negativity about Glass in the real world is virtually non existant. Fellow students, professional engineers, even catering people at a party I was at yesterday are completely blown away and incredibly excited by the product.

They’ve giving you 31GB with a free Google Apps account? Or were you paying for storage before?
I added the 25GB plan to my Google Apps account when I read they were discontinuing it. But if they’re giving 30+ for free, there’s obviously no need…

And taking delivery of our Model S in Costa Mesa tomorrow.
And picking up my Google Glass in Venice on Friday.
Very futuristic next couple of days :-)
