I know what you mean, I’m a big fan of all of the series (bar ds9 which I could never get into) and I thought it was a good film (mainly thanks to the actors and the director to a certain extent) but I think the script let it down a bit to be honest. I agree with some of what The Verge is saying in that it didn’t go into enough depth with ANY of the problems that the story put forward, it all just felt like lip service. It really did seem like they tried to cover as many start trek related issues as possible and consequently failed to make a point about any of them. But I don’t think it was a disaster at all, though I do think the first one was a fair bit better (even just for the score which worked a lot better in the first).

Well, we’ll always be trying to work out how the future will play out, and with regards to this in particular it could be make a difference on spending millions on unnecessary flood defences in the far north and millions on flood defences at the equator that turn out to be insufficient.

Apologies then, I wasn’t really sure on what terminology to use considering it’s an already proven theory being applied to a particular scenario. Haha, well it’s a dangerous game to judge people from a single use of casual slang, but it’s your decision at the end of the day. :)

To be honest, I’ve never really been annoyed at these workers at all, I’ve always seen them as doing a job that has to be done. I do remember one time though, when going through Turkish border control and having to pay for the visas, that a Scottish family in the other queue were having a heated argument trying to make the border officer understand that Scottish pound sterling notes were of the exact same value as English pound sterling notes. But I can’t say that the officer was being particularly harsh about it (not that it wasn’t harsh, it was) when you consider that it’s hard enough as it is to convince shops in England that it’s legal tender!

The weather always changes, the climate doesn’t change much (during the existence of a species). What normally happens with climate shifts is loads of things go extinct (or evolve to adapt).

What ‘naughty’ priests did for religion? Do you mean peadophiles who enjoyed the protection and employment from the church? If you’re seriously using that as an analogy to discourage reporting related to climate change I think you’ll find you’re heading in the wrong direction in most people’s perspective. You’re also deluded if you think that the chance of a comet hitting us is a good analogy to the ‘chances’ of climate change happening. It is happening. A better anology would be scientists observing that a comet is on a collision course with us, unsure of exactly how fast it’s travelling or exactly how big it is (although they have evidence to show it’s fairly big), and people saying ‘hey, comets have hit earth before, why are we worrying this time?’ or ‘hey, when I look through my own telescope, I can see the comet moving across the sky, if it’s heading towards us it wouldn’t do that!‘. [NB. I think a comet is made of ice and would therefore be dealt with upon entry through the atmosphere, so I think you mean meteor (which would then be a meteorite upon collision), at least I think that’s right if I remember correctly.]

Apologies for the lack of quotation and uncertainty in what I’m saying, I don’t have the article at hand unfortunately (might be able to sneak another look Thursday though), but perhaps someone else does and could help out? :P

True, but the theory of gravity is a pretty good one and what they’re theorising isn’t overly complex, so I think the real question is how much of an effect it has rather than whether it has an effect at all. I think I remember reading that they specifically expect a drop in sea level within around 1,000km (of one of the poles I assume, can’t remember exactly or which) at the least, but potentially further away than this (up to around 3,000km I think, again can’t remember exactly).

Actually, scientists have theorised that those close to the ice caps could see a drop in sea levels due to lack of gravitational pull of the ice (because it would then be gone) which is ‘compensated’ for by an extra rise in sea levels around the equator. So if they’re far enough north, they may not have to worry (unless this only happens long term not short term, I’m not sure exactly how it plays out when modelled).

I don’t know whether the US Navy helps with search and rescue like the Royal Navy does, but if so I’m sure this would be of great help in saving lives, rather than ending them.
