Meh. I don’t see the big deal. I can access all my Gmail, there are tons of YouTube apps, no one I know uses Google + and if you use windows phone you have got Nokia maps. There’s even a good 3rd party Google maps app. Sure none of this is ‘official’ but if you get a windows phone its probably because the Microsoft Ecosystem is a good choice for you. Outlook, SkyDrive, Xbox music, Xbox live games, exchange support, office, etc

Tom I have a great respect for you since your Win Rumors days. I surely hope that doesn’t change. I however disagree with your point. The app situation for Windows Phone HAS changed especially in the recent weeks and since WP8.
Lets talk official apps
Pandora Radio
Tumblr
Hulu Plus
NBC News
Disqus
Indigo
YouTube
Foursquare
Twitter
Bloomberg
Facebook Beta
Open Table
Viber
Home Shopping Network
Fidelity
Star Trek
Lots of these apps are receiving excellent updates with features unique to windows phone. This shows committed support for the Windows Phone platform. Whether Microsoft themselves provide the support is immaterial. The support is there and companies are taking note. Some are even benefiting from the support from Microsoft as is the case with Foursquare. That should be noted as positive.
Then there are the games
All versions of Angry birds
Asphalt 7
Dark Knight Rises
Galactic Reign (wp exclusive)
Gravity Guy 2 (launched on wp first)
Modern Combat 4
Ruzzle
Skulls of Shogun (wp exclusive)
Temple run
Real Soccer 2013
Ice Age Village
Bejeweled Live +
Cut the Rope Experiments
Amazing Spiderman
Amazing Alex
This week N.O.V.A. 3 is hitting wp8.
So Tom, I disagree heartily. I think Windows Phone has come a long way and users are happy. Those of us who love the platform are excited about the recent developments and yes you were being unnecessarily negative.

Yep the problem isn’t that they’re 3rd party is that they are trying to look ‘official’. You aren’t supposed to even use the “Facebook logo” or name at all without permission. This goes for any 3rd party app.

Fair points. But my real point is this: people are saying windows rt is dead, I’m saying I don’t see how since x86 also doesn’t have these tablet apps. To use tumblr on the surface pro they’d still have to use the website.

But its available. A simple google search will present the arm version. Same way any regular user will find software on their PC.

Notepad++, putty etc CAN be run on the surface RT. There’s a list of open source recompiled for arm apps on XDA. (I’ve got putty on my surface RT)
Also those software’s like Visual Studio and Outlook are for power users. I’m talking netbook/ipad crowd!

I use the desktop OneNote on my Surface RT the majority of the time. I like the layout better, it works GREAT with touch and has ALL the features compared to one note mx. Also in in One Note MX you cannot use capacitive pens which you can do in the desktop oneNote. This is a huge difference on tablets without digitizers.
