Apple got promptly sued over some underlying patent — they were unable to open it up, unless they wanted to pay for every single third party user. But yeah, it’s always more fun to blame Apple, than to spend 30 seconds googling to find out what actually happened.
Facetime video in my experience has been more reliable than Skype audio (never mind video) thus along with the much better integration into iOS FaceTime audio-only will be my preferred method for calling friends and relatives oversees.
Obviously if ones circle isn’t overwhelmingly iOS users, Skype has to be in the mix.
It is disappointing (to say the least) moving in 1970s from communist, spy on its citizens, Eastern Europe to the “land of the free” that as it turns out also spies on its citizens, only far more competantly and with far better computers to search through the data.
This is of course not news to anyone paying attention — google “echelon”. And, lest I get nostalgic for the old country in its new European Union guise, bugging phone calls continues apace there as well.
