Well, it’s global, so the $100 or so it costs to put touch on it would just price it out of most markets and make it uncompetitive. I think the figure would be much higher if you just decided to look at the developed nations.
Where do you think the money ultimately goes if you host a tourist? heck anyone? Does it just stay in that house?
Short answer is No.
Long answer is, they spend it on local business, tourist attractions, maybe they’re seeing family, or just want to be there for a few days. Which means the companies that profit from that have to pay more tax in one way or another. Everyone’s a winner.
I can understand your argument if the landlord is renting to 5 people on rotation, that’s an illegal hotel, but for one person for a few days while he’s out of town? I don’t think anyone is losing out to be honest. There’s massive demand that it would barely dent or damage, in any serious way, the local hotels. Even if the prices goes down it just makes it within reach of more people to visit the city which would push them up again.
