I was also holding out hope for this press conference as well, but it’s clear Verizon is not the carrier for me anymore…

This is a fantastic first step, though I doubt the most fervent fanfiction communities will see any of these “blanket licenses” issued to Amazon.
But they should. If Wide Sargasso Sea can be published, I don’t see why (quality) fanfiction shouldn’t be.

It’s important not to conflate what is intended with a device with what is possible. Microsoft may never INTEND to use this to spy on families using their Xbox. Someone may subvert those intentions because it is POSSIBLE.
ANY technology can be co-opted, and buyers should be aware that they are putting an always-on camera/microphone device (that does not have any activity light) in their living room.

Or maybe the organizers did two or three withdrawals in cities where the mob action hadn’t been organized, allowing their moves to fall under the radar of the $45 million larger picture.
Or maybe I watch too many heist movies… :)

This is factual. I work for a company that insures banks (and service providers like those that produce the cash cards) against losses like these. It will likely be insurers and re-insurers who will bear most of this loss and who will organize the legal action if necessary.

I only have one, so I can’t say anything about a typical experience, but I have nothing but praise for my Pebble. Once in a while it crashes (maybe once every three weeks) but automatically reboots and syncs back up fine. Otherwise, it does what I want and is actually smaller than my Wenger watch, so it doesn’t look too goofy.
I do wish it had a microphone so I could use Google Now through it, but I guess that’s what Glass is going to be… only way less discrete.

Biology seems to me to be as much magic as science at times, but doesn’t something that increases the risk of contracting HIV just as valuable information to have? Whenever you affect the probability of an occurrence you know more about the things that control its incidence rate, right?

It doesn’t, but we only know how to recognize life that evolved on Earth, so our search is for planets that have similar circumstances to bring about the same kind of life.
