When widgets were first introduced handsets were not powerful enough to make use of them. If you had widgets on your desktop they would suck up all your available resources.
These days that’s not the case, handsets have got so much RAM that you can quite easily have a good number of widgets and not see any impact on performance.
Back in the day I never used them because of the resources issue. Things have changed, I’ve got 2GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU. Running a few widgets doesn’t hurt a bit.
My Widgets:
DashClock
Google Keep
Eye in Sky
Google Now
Simple Calendar

NEWS FLASH: LIFE is about compromise.
Very, very rarely will anything fit exactly what you want. You just have to decide what aspects – of whatever it may be – are the most important, and be willing to compromise on the rest.
If you don’t accept that, you will never be happy.

I suppose that Google are hoping that enough people might use the apps that they get fed up of having to open them and of being forced in to Apple’s apps that they don’t want.
Then comes the simple solution, don’t use iOS.
Google wins either way.

…and potentially win people over to Android. How many iOS users now have Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, and now Google Search in place of Apple apps? Sooner or later it will occur to people to jump ship completely.
These new, and very well designed apps are a brilliant move by Google.
