Currently, it’s a v0.1 early access preview with missing features. Don’t get me wrong, I think It would be pretty great and inline with other Google software if it remained free, but maybe the eventually more stable, feature-rich versions (v1.0) will include a price tag, which is typical of a fully integrated development environment.

Yes, but it’s not really a plugin in the sense that you can download IntelliJ and then install the plugin separately. It’s offered as a complete package. It’s similar to Flash Builder, which is basically Eclipse with many Flash development specific tools and menu options.

Assuming Android Studio is free, like Eclipse, which it probably won’t be unless I missed the announcement stating it would be free.

Wait. What? Do you have a source for your statement? I would have assumed that Google would have created Android Studio based on IntelliJ, not a plugin.
