You may try disabling it’s disappearance from the “General” Pref Panel but I do agree it’s really annoying when it happens.

You’re assuming a LOT. Ask people nearby if they notice more eye strain reading from an iPad than a computer monitor, then tell us what they said.

Yes there are many other variables besides reflections that can cause eye strain but the OP blamed his eye strain only on the “air gap reflections” so I kept it simple and tried to explain that it’s not the only factor in screen reflectance.

Yes, the air gap can produce reflections, but it’s not the only parameter they consider in the reflectance tests.
The iPad even performs better in these tests than some bonded screens like the Tab.
