There are very few companies who can charge a premium price for a product, and continue to charge the premium price and still make money, Apple being one of those companies. Apple can do this though cause of the perception of their devices to the general public. Most people, when they want an iPhone, they want an iPhone, and not just any phone that has a touch screen, and you can only get an iPhone from Apple, same goes for a MB or MBA, or an iMac. In most people minds though, a TV is a TV, and they’re going to look for the cheapest TV that offers all or most of the options they want. Brand loyalty isn’t as prevalent as it used to be, low price is the driving force now, so that’s what people are looking for.

I so totally agree with you, and I’ve been saying all the same things. Basically the greed of these companies is the driving force behind everything they do. I just have to accept that tiered pricing is coming, and just pray to (insert your god here) that they offer an unlimited option.

It’s funny you should say that. Every time I’ve said almost the exact same thing, I end up getting more comments in favor of tiered pricing than against. People that aren’t as into technology as those of us here on The Verge are, don’t like that they pay the same price for using 10gb per month as those of us who use 500gb per month, and sadly, those non-techie people far outnumber us techie people. So in the end, and it hurts me to say this, I think we’re going to have to compromise and at least hope for and unlimited option.

I don’t like the idea of data caps, but if your going to offer tiered planes, at least have an unlimited option. I can get unlimited cell phone minutes, so I should be able to get unlimited data if I’m willing to pay for it.

Simple, because ISP’s in the US are greedy. AT&T was originally broken up because they got too big and greedy and stopped caring about their customers. The government came in and broke them up and started regulating them in the consumers interest, but since they deregulated that stuff some years ago, these companies are just doing what they do best again, and that’s charge more for less.

300GB is a horrible place to start. Any cap is a horrible place to start. If you have three roommates, all using their own Netflix and Hulu accounts, they’ll go through 300gb in a week.

If the telco’s are going to keep upping the speeds, then then should be upgrading the backbones first to be able to handle the additional date, before they offer the additional speeds. Verizon, which way back started as a Ma Bell company, is doing what Ma Bell does best when not regulated, they make things seem way worse than they really are so that they can charge more for less, i.e. are being greedy.

Data caps are crap, and I have to disagree with Chris Zeigler on his previous article about it. I think we should be fighting the ISP/Telco’s on the data caps. They keep increasing the speeds, but tack on data caps. People are going to be hitting their caps sooner and sooner, and that’s without doing anything that goes against EULA, like tethering, and stuff.
Data caps are bad and people need to be fighting to get rid of them.

It seems to me that you could get more accurate numbers with digital streaming than you can with cable and satellite. With streaming, someone has to use their mouse and/or keyboard to pick what they want to watch, and chances are that they are watching it, but with a cable/satellite box, just because it’s on a channel, doesn’t mean someone is actually watching it. The TV could be off and no ones home, but the box is still on that channel.
They’re all just too lazy to try and figure out how to capitalize on the internet. They have the money that if they sat down and did some real r&d and testing, they could probably come up with some pretty cool shit, but that costs money, and heaven forbid if they have to spend money to make their service better or more accessible.

I agree with what you say. I know every single one of the ~70 people on my FB friend list, I may not know them very well, but I have met them IRL. There are however a lot of people, young and old, who will friend back anyone and everyone who friends them, especially if they see that they attend, or have attended the same school or work place as themselves.

I still enjoy seeing movies in the theaters with friends and family, but a two and half hour theater movie is more like a four hour experience. You have to take into account driving to the theater, waiting in line, then watching the movie, then dealing with traffic getting out and then driving home.

We don’t need Jony Ive at Samsung. What we need is for upper management to realize that they probably have people in their employ that have some great ideas for industrial design and allow them to produce prototypes that can get be vetted by the general public and see what people like.

And yet Samsung can’t seem to design a cool looking phone to save their lives. I have a GS2 and love it, but in terms of design, it’s quite a boring phone, and so is the GS3. Samsung has the manufacturing ability, and I’m sure design talent on staff, to design and build some stuff that would put Apple’s products to shame, but they persist on making boring looking devices. Why? HTC is finally starting to realize this, the new One series devices are much cooler than their past phones, Nokia’s devices are pretty neat looking as well. Samsung is probably one of the largest electronics manufactures in the world, and with manufacturing technologies available today, there is no reason for lackluster looking devices.
