Fan of stock 4.1.2, Trackpoints, pizzicato funk basslines, Fujifilm Velvia, and 70s jazz-fusion music. Buys orange juice with lots of pulp. Runs a desktop caseless. Evo 4G with CM9, Nexus 7 on 4.1.2. Radio Shack 63/36/2 silver bearing preferred.

It outspecs the One in many regards though. It’s hard to say this isn’t a flagship.

I’m kind of frustrated now by the spotty tech coverage. While I used to read the Verge almost exclusively for tech news, I now have to supplement it heavily with Engadget, since there’s a lot of purely tech news/annoucements that the Verge seems to miss (e.g. HTC Butterfly S annoucement this morning ) that Engadget and other sites catch.
I’m kind of okay with the Verge branching off into culture, as long as the core tech coverage stays the same, but my perception is it hasn’t.

What’s wrong with 4.1? 4.2 adds barely any features, and if you ask the Nexus 7 people, the 4.2 update ruined the tablet for a lot of them.

I flashed mine’s back to 4.1.2 and 11 months later, it’s been fine. I haven’t used it particularly heavily though, so maybe the flash memory didn’t degrade as much.

You can download the stock 4.1 ROM at Google’s developer site and flash it with ADB. There’s instructions on XDA. That’s what I did after spending two days with 4.2 and hating it.

You walk outside with your device! Do you:
A) Arbitrarily set the brightness to 65%, even if that’s still too dim for some devices or too bright for others.
B) Turn up the brightness until your content is bright enough to be readable, whether that’s 40% for one device or 100% for a different device.

That does not excuse The Verge’s poor review methodology.

It’s also half the price and feels much better in the hand (that rubbery coating really helps). Unless you specifically need the S-Pen, no way is the Note 8 worth twice the Nexus 7.
