Ars is reporting that XMPP clients will work, just not federation.
So I should be safe for now… but don’t know how long that will last with their continual push to shove G+ up everyone’s something…

You’re not getting what I’m saying. You sign in to Google with a Google account authentication, but to access Hangouts you need a G+ profile ON TOP of the Google account. What is not in the Google Account to enable access to the server?

Doesn’t work properly. I searched for myself, profile page says I posted 155 comments, search only came back with 133.

But question is why? What on top of a basic Google account does it need to implement this?

If they did they would rethink about dropping XMPP.

No you don’t. If you have an older Google account before they started creating one along when you sign up.

That has changed. The desktop Chrome plugin now requires G+. Even the older Google Talk plugin on my laptop only presents that option.

Except that Google now is calling that “leeching off their success”.

And that’s what I’m telling you, not ALL Android users have one…
Reread what you said: It does, all android users have a google+ account. To download anything in the play store you must have one
You said downloading earlier, now you changed to commenting.

So the question still remains unanswered… is the text component basically just Google Talk and I can continue to just use that with third party clients? When is the last day that this will stop working?
To me that is more than enough, I have no interest in their “better communication experience” nor allowing people to search for me.

That is untrue. You only need a Google account, not Plus. Though new signups for a Google Account by default creates a Plus profile as well. It can be deleted.

This has nothing to do with standards or protocols and all to do with forcing people onto G+, on the long run.

Actually Google themselves aren’t too consistent on that. Try playing videos on YouTube Leanback, no ads there.

I haven’t tried with anyone that has migrated, besides I’m not on G+ anyways, so I don’t have any G+ contacts. Images definitely doesn’t work because that seemingly is built on Picasa a.k.a. Google+ Photos. Try to send = asking to upgrade to G+.

Just tried, no G+ needed. It’ll prompt you to do so but you can decline it. Only restriction is that the new features won’t work, i.e. group video chat and picture messaging.

It doesn’t require G+, but certain features will be unavailable, and it’ll prompt you to upgrade if you attempt to use it, i.e. photo sharing and group video chat.

I don’t think they will, at least anytime soon. I just pushed the Hangouts to my test device (Xperia X10 with FeraLab JB), it updated. Prompts me to upgrade to G+ which I declined, and it works. My Pidgin and Pre 3 still connects just fine.
Besides in the article it explicitly says “maintain some interoperability with Talk”, so I think this is what it means. If anything it seems like it’s still Talk under the hood.
So far like it that it makes opening group chats easier, but the downside is the contacts are a mess, because it displays the user’s name stored on Google by the user, not whatever I set in my Contacts, and it displays everybody. So I have my mechanic in the list..

This. And Pidgin on my machines. And my Pre 3. I actually rely on this on a daily basis.
Saving grace is that in the other article, it says that it’ll remain “interoperable with Talk”.
PS: quite painful to post comments right now on The Verge.

So I’m dying to know… “remain interoperable with Talk”, does that mean existing third party connectivity like via Pidgin still works?

Pretty sure 3 is a certain yes. They are trying to shove that down everyone’s throat at every opportunity they can.
As for 2 and 4… I think my bigger concern is third-party client support like Talk does today. If that’s a go, or you could say Talk will still work, I’m fine with that. I actually need the 3rd party support since I use Pidgin and webOS.
