Chrome = Chromium. Chrome is just the official release of the Chromium code. Google made Chromium.

Android succeeded because it allowed carriers and OEMs to build their own psuedo OSs. It was them that pushed Android to it’s success, not Google or Android itself. They could easily neglect Android and push WP7 instead. Nobody was rushing to buy a Android phone until they commercialized the brand (Moto Droid, etc.), it’ll take time but they can easily do the same with another halfway decent OS.

I don’t think it will go this route. It’s more likely that the Nexus will remain niche.

What exactly did this prove? Higher resolution screens bring out the true shapes of fonts. It also brings clarity to smaller text. Both are absolute positives.

If presented with two equal devices, one with a very high resolution and one without, you’d always get the higher resolution device. Not only because it’s a higher number in the spec sheet but because it offers real world benefits.

The only reason this post exists is because you probably support a platform that does not present this choice. You’re trying to rationalize it, rather stupidly too.

I can read tiny zoomed out text on my galaxy nexus because of the high resolution.

The high resolution of my iPad 3 makes fonts more faithfully represent their true glyph shapes.

I don’t have a high resolution desktop or laptop, but if I did and the SW supported it properly, the same would be true about typography. This is especially true with Cleartype / DirectWrite on Windows.

It’ll be exciting for about 3-6 months. Then it’ll be horribly outdated and relying on half working ports.

Android IS open. The devices that third party OEMs make are not and were never promised to be.
