Saying that the HD7 was a “success story” compared to a Windows Mobile device really isn’t saying much. The numbers you saw in this case are quite similar to the numbers in the broader marketplace, actually yours were probably somewhat in WP7’s favour.

Of course they have new products somewhere in the pipeline, but I think Ive was talking in a more general sense.
He didn’t say they were working on the best product they’ve ever made, but that the work they’re doing right now in general is the best work they’ve ever done. I would assume that includes iPhone, iPad and Mac, as well as the ecosystem that ties them together. They’re bringing intuitive computing to the masses and the growth of that idea since Steve’s death alone has been monumental. Look at their numbers quarter over quarter.

It’s already a legitimate platform. Look at the kind of money iOS developers are making and the influx of new small studios that can become professional game developers off a $1 app without needing a publisher and a distributor and all that.

It would be nice if the next Nexus was made by a manufacturer like HTC. Samsung really blew it on the hardware side with the Galaxy Nexus, pure ICS is great but the phone feels awful.

I can’t see them being too high, I still haven’t seen a single WP7 device in the wild. It seems to be a 50/50 split between iPhones and Androids (of which 90% are Samsungs and the other 10% are awful budget devices), and a few BlackBerries, most of which are cheap Curves.
Of course that’s anecdotal evidence, but I think there would be the occasional person with a Windows Phone on the subway or the street or whatever if they were moving significant numbers. It’s a shame, because I think WP7.5 is way better than Android (2.3 at least) in almost every way, and compared to iOS each has its pros and cons.

Is this customs issue specifically about the ’647 patent? I thought there were several others as well. Also HTC claimed in a 2011 press release that “the ‘647 patent is a small UI experience and HTC will completely remove it from all of our phones soon.”

It’s totally obvious once you see it, but you have to remember that there were loads of touchscreen phones before the iphone and none of them did all these TOTALLY OBVIOUS things

Great post. One other device I’d add is the Sidekick.

It was really the only comsumer-focused smartphone before the iPhone was released. Sure it has a reputation of being a toy for teens, but it became popular in that market because it was a good device.
It had a transflective LCD display way back in like 2004. Current phone screens tend to be completely unreadable in bright sunlight, the Sidekick had this problem solved almost 10 years ago.

€10 per month. I get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts, and 1GB of data. Additional data is billed at €4/GB, additional minutes and texts at €0.04 each.
No long term commitment, I can cancel anytime. The disadvantage is that I had to buy my handset upfront.
This is with Bob in Austria (www.bob.at). The €10/month package was a short term deal they did, currently the same thing would cost you €13/month which is still not bad at all.

Flycut – have you ever had something in your clipboard and then copied another thing only to later realize that the first was now gone? This solves that problem quite elegantly. Plus it’s free.
I also switched my cloud storage from Dropbox to SugarSync after the wonderful comparison The Verge did of all the available options.
Other than that my apps have remained pretty constant for the last few years.

It doesn’t look like The Verge at all in my opinion. It’s the same old Ars colour scheme with a new grid-based look to replace the ancient thing Ars had going on before.
Ars is a fantastic tech site that has been around for ages providing superb content. They know better than just ripping off the new kid on the block.

the current one does.
i wouldn’t be surprised if the next gen came with 256GB standard and a 512GB option, at least at 13". Also an 8GB option at 13". The upcoming CPU upgrades aren’t all that groundbreaking, so it would make sense to do something else to entice new buyers.
