Reminds me of the Cylon Civil war.

This is a good move. It’s best to let KLP be introduced with the Nexus 5 to separate it from the other Android OEM offerings.

Now you’re being silly…..Pierce did at least mention it was pre-release hardware but what he didn’t do was update the review to reflect “release” hardware/software because at the end of the day that’s what people are buying. If you want to be really silly, reviewing the phone so early would be like reviewing an iPhone prototype. People buy release products, not month old pre-releases. But if that’s the way you want to judge a device, be my guest.

And to review the battery so poorly is really bad if its going to stop someone from buying a phone thinking the battery is terrible when it is actually decent.
Comment
That’s obviously true but when David says the battery is really bad and every other recent review says its solid and as good as other top-end smartphones, it shows he reviewed it too early. It would be a different story if everyone else was saying the same thing but in this case he was pretty much wrong. I’m honestly not sure I trust the Verge’s battery reviews to begin with.

That would be true if the said updates came AFTER the phone launched or if they reviewed the phone right at launch. They gave the battery a 5/10 and when in actuality after release every other review I’ve read has stated the HTC One’s battery is solid. So I’d say Pierce really messed up here. He should have waited until the release date like pretty much everyone else. There was no need to review the phone so early.

While his reviews of both phones were fairly thorough he screwed them both up. He reviewed the One WAY too early before it was even released (before critical software updates) and thus gave the battery life an undeserved low 5/10 when Anandtech’s review showed the battery life to be slightly better than the GS4. Then he gave the camera 6/10 when once again well needed updates have come to the One since then to improve the camera’s performance. So really he reviewed the phone way too early. On the GS4 side he spent too much time crying about the design of the phone which is more subjective then anything (some will care with good reason, most won’t). So overall the reviews weren’t horrible but definitely not The Verge’s best.

There were good looking phones before the iPhone 5 and the One so what they’ve brought out this year is really not that new. To be honest I will agree they are great looking phones but I honestly could care less. The novelty of a good looking phone will wear off quickly (for me at least). My questions when purchasing a phone these days surround more around battery life, how easy it is the root the thing and how compatible it is with the custom ROMing community. That has kept my GNex running good enough for me to pass on all these phones that are out now and wait for the Nexus 5. That’s just my opinion. We are all entitled to that. I just find it strange that all of a sudden it is the upmost importance that a phone be of a premium design whereas before it was just a nice add on.

Well I agree, that is true by utilizing software and processors to optimize battery life has improved quite a bit. That’s the reason why I can still get through a day on my GNex. It was more the physical batteries themselves I was referring to. All vendors have done in that respect is make them bigger. There is some interesting battery tech I was reading about the other day on the horizon so things may change soon.

I think the problem is the “feel” of the phone is much more subjective then something like battery life or a 1080p screen vs. 720p, or a quad core processor vs. dual core. Those kinds of things are hard facts that aren’t as subject to opinion as much as build quality. Now, the One is unquestionably better build quality wise than the S4 but how much that matters is in the eyes of the beholder so naturally people who don’t care about that kind of thing or will just put a case on their phone will raise an argument. I do feel The Verge review weighed far too heavily on build quality, whereas last year it wasn’t as important a topic. I’m not sure what happened between this year and last to make build quality so much more important than it previously was. I think at the core, that’s the gripe some people are having.

I used to be a Lightflow user on my GNex. That is until it started eating up my battery for some reason recently. Then I discovered AOKP integrated their LED controls so since then I’ve switched to the AOKP version. Things have been better since then.

I have to agree with this. If we’re talking customization, on Android, the vast majority of customization that the iPhone needs jailbreaking for can be done without root on Android. As was posted above, MyColorscreen is the perfect example. If you look at the iOS section of that site compared to Android, you’ll see that iOS customization pales in comparison.
