Giving consumers the choice to adopt peripheral add-ons or not is ultimately a more popular price plan than forcing a more expensive bundle.
The only exception is perhaps Apple with its RDF.

As Sun Zi rightly says, the outcome of wars affect the fates of nations; hence it must be studied with great care. Starting long-running and spurious wars is generally ill policy.
Intelligence (pretty much what Spying delivers), on the other hand, is one of the most valuable asset of any conflict.

And here I thought we’re arguing that China’s relative young age at being an capitalist industrial economy is an impediment to them taking on big projects. Good to know that’s sorted out.

It’s always possible… I thought Mountain Lion was a lower version number than 10.8.

A middle ground would be
- to allow developers to choose the tile color; and if they did not
- to allow users to assign a specific color for that tile; and if they did not
- adopt the accent color like in WP8.
I’ve found it odd that W8 does not allow for changes to the tile color, resulting in a very colorful start screen which may not be to everyone’s liking. I really don’t mind this, but would prefer if an option is given in both W8 and even WP8.

Android is not by Apple… and 1.5 is 2009… Metro UI is first adopted 2006:
- Android release dates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29
- Metro UI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_UI
LCARS is also not by Apple. It’s also fictional – like the Minority Report UI; one would need to see the UI in daily use before we draw conclusions on their useability. Even then, they remain conceptual and not ‘production’. OSX is production. Windows is production. Linux is production.
- LCARS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCARS
I’m only familiar with Bauhaus as an architectural and Industrial Design style. It’s just not a UI, and neither does that mean that Apple has implemented it on their operating systems – there’s still quite a bit of interpretation / translation from physical to virtual media, if you get what I mean…
I’m just not seeing how Apple had “flat design before they brought OSX and iOS to consumers”.

The most important thing about the OSX announcement is that it is now officially versioned 10.9. That means the “ver 11” is likely round the corner and Apple is working on a big change for their OS, possibly scheduled for release next year or maybe a bit later after that.

The design does not feel like a step forward. I have to agree with Josh that overall it just looks confused.
They flattened the icons and left the rounded corners – the effect felt like a glossy book cover with the gloss laminate peeled away – everything is paler, wash-out, and less sharp. The overall effect does not feel modern in any way. (I don’t mean mean modern as in “Modern UI”, just modern as in keeping up to contemporary styles)

I agree – wireless can solve quite a bit of these… I’m thinking BT mouse and keyboard, NAS, and wireless solutions for print, audio, and video are all available.
Nonetheless I think MS will do well to make/sell a proper dock for those serious with replacing their desktop with a Surface Pro. Their advertising says just “click in” after all.

Being an ultrabook spec, the Surface Pro can replace the desktop if your use cases fit. But the main issue is probably the lack of a proper one-click dock where you can connect all the other desktop stuff – e.g. flat panel display, keyboard, speakers, external drives, even a wired mouse. I mean, imagine the effort of having to plug out all the stuff just to pick up the tablet on the go… speakers from audio socket, the monitor from the MDP, the USB hub(s) for everything else…

Laptops is defacto OEM territory and MS shouldn’t risk their partnership on a non-growth segment.
On the other hand I would love to see a Haswell-equipped fanless tablet in the form of a Surface Pro 2. :)

Four divisions, four panels on the Windows icon. Coincidence?
I think the rumored re-org would probably make MS more focused and hopefully result in faster iterations for their products. Maybe a bit more coherence between them too.

Not calling Maps as “beta” on launch was (to me at least) pretty indicative of the loss of some marketing prowess that went with Jobs.

Well it’s only been a year for Ive… OSes being complex, any radical change might indicate rushed jobs. Better to implement changes in phases.
