Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are much more rural than the majority of America in general. Laos in particular is one of the more rural places in the entire world where most inhabitants do rely on farming rice crops in the months when the monsoons are providing large amounts of rain. I don’t understand how anything I said is problematic at all.
And yes, bringing better wireless infrastructure to any part of the world is good. The antithesis of this statement was never implied at any point.

I agree with you on all accounts actually, and I know you aren’t really “outraged,” I was just using a bit of hyperbole.

Usually an apology is offered just as a courtesy. A simple “sorry to inconvenience our cherished developer community” or something. At the very least it would hve stopped people like Dieter from being outraged.

Well, it should, all sarcasm aside, but that’s just highlights the differences between the two companies. One is making software to get people to be on the web, and one is making software to get people to be on their proprietary hardware.

Google looks like the much stronger company here, Microsoft looks like a loser who can’t do anything without Google’s permission and assistance.

In this instance it is less about “increas[ing] [Youtube] traffic from WP” as it is about acknowledging that Windows Phone even exists, which up until now Google has not done. I think that’s the real news here.

Microsoft was slow because.. well I don’t know at all.
However what is evident is that Microsoft is moving at a much quicker pace. Windows 8.1 will arrive shortly and it hasn’t even been a year since Windows 8 was officially released. A 7" Surface is (allegedly) in the works and it hasn’t even been a year since the original Surfaces were officially released…

So yes, diverting resources to WP apps /will/ slow down progress of the more important aspects of their lineup.
Doubtful.
Also how is providing the most-popular video sharing site to more users not an “important aspect of their lineup?”

Ads for what though? It’s not like they have credit cards to order a new pair of Adidas and have them next-day air’d to their front doorstep.
These areas aren’t at that technological stage yet. Google is taking up the cause getting the ball rolling towards advancement. In the future, when these areas are more developed, sure, they’ll target ads at them, but not right now. This is a long-term strategy play.

What is Google going to do? Target ads at them? These people live in small communities that mainly rely on farming and hunting.

Yeah Yahoo is buying things just because “buying things” is the hip thing to do these days.
That being said Hulu could do a lot worse than Yahoo.

I can because of what I’ve made of my own Facebook account. Most of my Facebook friends are my actual friends, yes, but a large sub-set of them are people I’ve met only once or never even met IRL at all, just from the Facebook commenting sections on some blogs. Furthermore, my Facebook profile is totally unique in what products/services I’ve identified as “Liking,” etc.
The point still stands… any social network is as useful as one tailors it to their own personal desires.

You’re right. Ignore the “mobile” distinction in my previous post. Google makes the majority of web advertising profits as a whole, which is probably one of the bullet point facts being used to initiate this investigation. They’re the iPhone of web advertising – not the largest marketshare, but certainly the largest revenues in the sector, and growing.

while also tying them all together so that your experience with another company will not work right.
It’s called “integration” and Apple is lauded for it, while most in the tech industry actually beg for more of it from Google and Microsoft. What’s at stake is whether Google’s integration is hurting competitor’s products. At this early stage I would guess nothing will come of this, since Google’s integration no more interferes with competitor products than Apple’s or Microsoft’s integration of products and services.

The twitter experience is what you make it. Who you follow who you allow to follow you. It’s a pretty unique experience per person.
This rings true for just about every social network.
