especially considering that most media hasn’t hit 1080p yet.

Blu-rays are 1080p and iTunes is now serving up 1080p movies and TV shows. That’s an extremely large chunk of media…

Most HD television channels top out at 720p as well

In the US, maybe, but in other countries, such as here in the UK, all the HD TV channels are 1080i – which, once deinterlaced, is almost (but not quite) as good as 1080p.
