This is one of those areas where size does really matter. Touch in the car is just fine when the UI controls are big enough. Tesla has successfully demonstrated this.
Of course, when you have layers of confusing UI on a tiny 7" screen then yeah, it sucks. This is the same debate that people had around touch-only smart phones. UX sucked until someone fixed it. Same deal here.

Before you start arguing just try Tesla first. They know what they are doing.
