Cool concept. As my wife pointed out, no way that would end up in my living room though… The screen effects bugged the crap out of her. I think this should always be a potential add-on to a xbox for those intense gamers that probably have dedicated gaming/movie rooms.
The concept though is pretty cool though, especially the ability to get more information to the first person through the periphery.

I find it hard to defend your statement for this post. I think its pretty obvious that your use-case is not ‘normal’ and that the ‘normal’ user would eventually reboot in the 2-3 days at some point after being warned about it for a while since those updates may make the OS run better and be more protected (for free). Everyone thinks they are a normal user if thats what they do, but in all actuality your use-case may not be so normal
While it may not seem “right” to reboot after 3 days of being warned, I cannot think of any business owner or corporation that would want you to delay updating the OS to potentially protect you from something for three days…
I would also point out that while 3 days may seem arbitrary, it most likely is not and is probably based upon user feedback and security standards in the first place.
I think we all learned an important lesson now didn’t we. When your done using the thing for a time and you know there was a needed reboot, just reboot it.

Agreed. Never meant my comment to mean that the Surface was the sole factor, just that it did show that PC’s don’t have to be poorly built and “not as cool” as the IEquivalent. not to say that everyone thought that, just that “perception is reality”

It honestly seems like the Surface Pro strategy may have worked out for MS actually. I am speaking in regards to form factor, not pure specs. Instead of OEM’s just producing “next model” crap, they are starting to produce some new form factors and some real innovation. MS throws the gauntlet with Surface Pro and its detachable keyboard and now Sony throws back a product that people like. I can only imagine what ASUS, Lenovo, etc are cooking up with Haswell.
While I still like the Surface form factor (use the RT daily for at home usage), this could easily replace the RT I am using with higher specs.
I think I will be at the point towards the end of this year to grab a new Win8 tablet/laptop and if this is any indication of whats to come, should be awesome. I think we, as consumers, still need more options though to drive down costs for machines like these. It is almost unheard of to pay more than $1000 for just a everyday house PC. Give me this or something similar (Surface Pro 2) under $1K with Haswell and 10+ hours battery life and you have a deal.
With the products coming out like this, people like myself and probably lots of others are finally ready to upgrade their Win7 machines to a new Win8 touchscreen device.

I think the point of the comment was that the most qualified people some times do not get the job. There is a lot of data to support that as well. MS has been pushing recently throughout the company to do just that. This is them backing it up. It still needs to happen more though. A lot more.

So what happens if Starbucks just supports both. Just imagine, Apple people sitting on one side of the shop with their PMA table chargers and Android and WP people sitting on the other side with their Qi table chargers. Finally, true segregation based upon tech. With all this said, Yes, can someone please create a table for me to put a laptop and my mobile without using cords to charge both of them? Can we also provide a NFC so I don’t have to plug anything in?

I think the one size fit all approach is part of the reason Windows 8/rt devices are not doing well .
I think there is a little bit more to it than that…
I run a laptop at work with a docking station and multi-monitors and so do a lot of people in Entprises environments. My current llaptop runs about 2gigs and compares really close to this little tablet. Rarely do I ever pull the laptop off the docking station (except when I am at home or in a meeting).
With all that said, touchscreen + reduced start-up time already outweight the crap I put up with with my old Win 7 laptop. Give me that little thing any day over this thing… Now I wonder what my company paid for this laptop?
My only concern is the harddrive to be honest…

Regurgitating a more pointed question to MS itself:
I think the better question is, “why has no accessorie maker targetted the click-in connector through a MS license for Surface Pro’s or RT?” I would venture a guess that 1) MS is going to be releasing their own for Enterprise/Corporate or 2) Accessory makers have not identified a market due to their already being a solution via the USB 3.0 (for Pro at least) and do not want to pay MS a licensing fee for using the special proprietary connector.
So in the one hand, the USB lets people do a lot of stuff with the Surfaces, but on the other hand it also reduces the ability for companies to make a profit or develop new solutions using the other proprietary connector.
It could also be that the proprietary connector itself does not provide enough ability to support a desktop dock (where-as USB 3.0 does).
Just a few thoughts…

Manufacturing may care. Most manufacturing engineers or lab techs, etc may prefer a tablet form factor vs. a laptop since they are easier to carry and more versatile. With that said, I believe MS would want a early release to consumers and assume after its first few releases that would be their target. The question is do they have anything to sell or are they just prototypes in June. I would imagine they will make them available since they are more experienced in the manufacturing and supply chain for this market. With that said, there just may not be enough parts yet to support the release. Again, I could not imagine that MS would not want to release these yesterday. But its also kinda funny or stupid to point that out. What company would not say “I wish we released that product 100 years ago”?

The fact you can go into any major providers store and try it yourself, I find your question kinda funny. Go try it yourself. As a biased ‘lover’ I have never really felt as though I was missing anything from my 8X. Then again, maybe ignorance is bliss. The UI is nice and fresh and just works. Market share is never a way to judge a product that has to make up a lot of ground in it.

So in the one sense you suggest that they should make the product available when they announce it, and then in the other sense you give them grief for not doing it. I think everyone in the world agrees that would be nice for consumer products. Announce and make available right away. Its free advertisement from alomst every newspaper, tech journal, etc… I am sure MS would love that…
There is a philosophical difference between Enterprise customers and the average consumer though. A Enterprise may actually be more inclined to want the early warning so they could plan their resources and deployment of such a device. Apple knows that its customers are mostly consumers and not buinesses so it makes sense. MS is a little different in that regard though. In this specific case, it makes perfect sense since the 7" (RT I am assuming) is geared more towards consumers and less towards businesses (although I am sure they will try to push it for both).

So what your telling me is a single remote.. and its my phone, or tablet, or laptop. Excellent. Now to get a input for a secondary media player (Betamax VCR, Blu-ray, etc…) Granted I would need those remotes, (if my Betamax VCR actually had a non-wired remote ;))

I think the solution MS would pick would be one that does a little of both. Yes, you can use Smartglass to get some content from the Xbox or Xbox Mini to your device, but full functionality would not be available unless you were using a mini. I like the idea above where people would be able to push a second screen through a XBOX mini. I mean how many times have you wanted a XBOX with two HDMI outs for multiple screens? My biggest issue with multiplayer gaming (especially for first person shooters) has always been using a single screen. It has inherent issues with screen watching, screen size reduction, etc… It is a much better experience to link two xboxs together and play a LAN game against someone on another screen, etc… The solution above resolves my biggest concerns with this (albiet in a (hopefully) cheaper way than buying more games and xbox’s to play the games). It also allows developers a better, more nimble (and stable), and dynamic set of possibilities to incorporate features into a game.
In this world, a gamer would simply have to carry his Xbox Mini and controller and patch into a screen (Maybe a Surface Pro, maybe a 80" LED, etc…) and then join a game on a local LAN that is running the game off of the Durango machine. Maybe the game developers charge for Lan game rights, maybe they don’t, but it gives them another potential revenue chain.
I don;t know, there are just so many things they COULD do with this setup.

I agree. Getting upset over rumors is stupid. Wait until you hear it from the horses mouth before getting upset about anything. “Always on” could necessitate the requirement of being able to wake it with your voice or gestures. “Always on” could also necessitate a internet connection. Who knows? Not us.
As pointed out above, it also could just be referring to the satellite Xbox’s.
I really like it when users put ultimatums on new products and say “if its only wireless controllers, I am not BUYING” or something like that. If its that important to you, just go back to playing your 3DO (of which I had one and it was awesome).

To be released around the same time as next gen Xbox and PS4 which will do more may make the market view you have not as straightforward. If XBOX is a competitor, then you may have am issue.

Just an idea here…
What about a Surface Pro and a Surface RT tied together with a magnetic connector that has a tilt adjust. You could then use the RT as your keyboard and the Pro as your screen and seperate them if you wanted to. Then when you want to pack them up, just close the two together.
I call it SurfaceTron.
