So true. Most of our time on the computer is spent in the browser. In essence, chrome and firefox (to a lesser extent) have created a rich community of followers and supporters simply due to the extensions they offer.
When I’m using IE I feel like a lone wolf, I can’t interact with any other IE user through an extension store or anything. A totally different vibe when using chrome/firefox and their vibrant community of supporters.
IMO this is a major area that needs focus and MS needs to reevaluate their stance on this issue.
Perhaps they should block extensions on enterprise version of Windows (for safety and security), or only allow admins the rights to install extensions. And for the rest of the consumers offer extensions akin to the chrome/firefox stores.

While I appreciate a plugin-free web, I don’t understand why this has to translate to a plugin free browser.I really wish I could extend ie10 desktop or the metro version for additional functionality.
I guess we’ll have to wait for firefox to release their metro version, which is hopefully soon!

What’s better for wireless connectivity for a laptop. The mobile mouse uses a wireless receiver and the sculpt uses bluetooth. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I can’t wait for these high resolutions screens! Why would you complain about the the cpu/gpu not being able to handle the high res game or app since you can just decrease the resolution from the gpu menu.

The hardware is not the problem. The Software is. Software takes time. Especially on such a big project. MS has to support a new architecture now. Stuff can’t be ported so developers have to update their software or rewrite new software. This all takes time. Windows 8 launched very recently so its no surprise that things are off to a slow start and that the OS isn’t as speedy as the hardware is capable of (optimization takes time). Android took a long time before amassing a large app base so did the Ipad. Windows 8 will take longer because of the already intrenched userbases on andoird and apple, but it will eventually come around… in time. So don’t worry too much about the hardware, since as we see with each update MS releases to the firmware, os, and apps the speed gains are substantial.

We need a new organization of external security experts to evaluate all these new devices that may be clandestinely sharing our data with advertisers et al. We simply cannot trust google/microsoft/apple word that their products do not invade our privacy (after all, why would they openly state that the products share your data and drive off customers) Time and again we have seen that these corporations simply are not bothered with securing our data since a good profit can be made form them.
In particular I hope an expert will evaluate kinect/xbox source code to determine if any sharing of our data is shared behind doors to an online database. Hopefully this would only confirm that the Kinect is indeed not sharing any data behind backdoors but is only dynamically listening to your actions, but we cannot assume microsoft’s statements.

Don’t know why but the asymmetric of the tablet really bothers me. One side has sharp corners and the other soft, rounder corners? Drives me mad.

I don’t think its a driver issue since I’m also having the same problems. FYI I’m on an Intel CPU and an AMD GPU, under 64 bit Windows 8

Thanks aThingOrTwo. Seems very odd to disable such a feature. I understand the reasoning behind the decision, but as you correctly point out Quartz doesn’t seem to have the problem due to its optimization.

It’s the drivers and Windows, presumably. The OS needs better trackpad support, with smoother gestures. MS isn’t known to innovate unless it has to, and from XP to Win 7 it had so much market share that little things like this that make a huge difference to the user experience but are overall minor quirks didn’t really bother MS.
However, it does seem like MS has quickly realized that they can’t just sit and hope people will tolerate such things much longer, since google and apple have really put tremendous pressure on their markets. All in all, I am glad we have this healthy competition it pushes MS to not be lazy is it has been for far too long.

Yeah the hardware is great. But how about the OS. I see so many creative professionals and web devs use a macbook and OSX. To me the main advantage of OSX is it is based on unix thus is slightly more compatible with h gnu/linux than windows, maybe this is why its so popular for web devs…i’m not sure.

Vimeo is great. Most creative professionals prefer posting on Vimeo than youtube. I personally like Vimeo the way it is. To me Youtube and Vimeo serve different purposes and have a different audience and user base, one that isn’t compatible with youtube. Thus it would make no sense for MS to buy Vimeo to compete with youtube. It would be a bad business decision for all angles.

Is the problem with drivers? I would rather not use a virtual machine due to performance hits. I have heard similar problems using bootcamp with driver issues, which worries me since I would likely be using windows a lot at the start while learning the new os.

No not the Powershell ISE, I meant the actual console. Like when you open the command prompt or powershell the console sucks compared to the ones available on GNU/Linux or Mac OS X

Personally, I disagree. I think Nokia will be better off for several reasons if it continues to innovate its smartphone camera technology rather than dividing its camera group to work on side projects that might fail to do Nikon/Canon’s HUGE advantage in the prosumer space. The likely hood of success is very small.
However, Canon/Nikon consumer point and shoots aren’t all that great and the photos produced by a Nokia smartphone are closely reaching the point were the image quality will match them.
Thus Nokia can build a strong name around its brand if it continues to lead the way as a company that delivers the best consumer level camera image quality in a smartphone device.
Where this all gets intresting is with the recent surge of mirrorless DSLRs from Nikon/Canon/Olypmus and others.

Wow something actually good from Sony recently. This laptop looks amazing for the price and features, and I am really digging the design, though I wish the keyboard on the 14" model used up more horizontal space and was more spaced out (not sure why they have left so much space on the sides, stupid decision IMO).
I’m eager to see their high end line up in the coming months.

I would disagree with " the people who use IE are those who don’t know better," I use ie10 about 40% of the time and would make it my full time browser if there were external plugins like those for chrome. I only use a few extensions but I find them crucial. ie11 is around the corner and I am excited to see what it brings to the table

Great job! The design is awesome. Chat dialog looks great. How do you switch modes? Is it via the top left icon, if so it’s a little ambiguous.
