Keep in mind that the UK is a much smaller landmass than the US, and has significantly fewer cattle than here in the States. The scale at which the USDA would have to reach to achieve the same results here would be incredible.

I’m glad to see someone talk about Beef Quality Assurance. And I think the article could talk about systems like this. I know here in Kentucky there is numerous Certified Preconditioned for Health (CPH) sales in different parts of the state that use RFID tags. The University of Kentucky Extension Service plays a big role (along with the Cattleman’s Association) in making this program work for farmers.
Also, coming from a small stocker calf operation (~60 to 70 head per year), the overhead on RFID tags is just too much on top of the other costs of production.
Bottom line, unless there is some kind of organized effort by the USDA (most likely in the form of a subsidy in the Farm Bill), I don’t see this taking off on a national level. There are simply too many small farms.
