And it isn’t even industrial espionage. It isn’t like no one at Apple knew Eric Schmidt was CEO at Google. The most likely explanation is that Apple thought Google would work on a Blackberry like device, and Apple would work on the all touchscreen device, which would form the high end of the market.
Lets not forget that Apple itself did not expect the tremendous success of the iPhone (e.g., they far exceeded Jobs’ keynote numbers…). And most likely Google didn’t either. But when they saw that the iPhone was completely replacing all kinds of smartphones, they realized they had to shift tacks.

Which probably explains why the apps on Android are so terrible, compared to their iOS counterparts.

Really? And pray, what is a firesale, if not lowering costs dramatically (in this case where they lose money every PB sold) to increase sales?
