Because Microsoft has a monopoly on the desktop market.
When a player gets such a monopoly, innovation stops because the market cannot absorb and reward it.
Siri is on the iPhone because people will switch to the iPhone to get Siri.
Windows users would not switch to Mac for Siri because they cannot: they are thoroughly locked in.
That’s because a good chunk of their documents are usable with Windows-only applications.
Those applications are Windows-only because Windows is a monopoly.
Siri will eventually come to the Mac, but it will be the last platform it is ported to because it is Apple’s least successful.
Money talks louder than Siri.

I’m sure wikipedia has a breakdown of the sizes for different SIM formats.
Compare and contrast the volume required and I’m confident you’ll find your answer.

iPhones aren’t getting bigger.
But even Android phones can use the space for extra battery if there really isn’t anything more important that might need to be squeezed in.

There’s no need for any adapters for the majority of users, it’s enough to deploy a new SIM card cutter to every point of sale.
Adapters will be needed for SIM card swapping, but that’s nothing new, it’s already needed for microSIM.

Sure, they got the satisfaction of being right and Apple gets their standard.
Everybody’s happy.

You’d better believe this will be in the 2012 iPhone, Apple wouldn’t have pushed this otherwise.
