Agree with most of your points. I do think there is a place for Hi Fi discussions on the Verge. Maybe it can just start as a forum topic and grow from there.

I periodically read Steve Guttenberg’s reviews and he seems to take a pretty balanced approach to hi-fi that doesn’t skew too much into the ultra-primo-luxe space. Well, sometimes he does.

Agreed. RT devices aren’t exactly flying off the shelves. Speaking of flying, I had two friends who inexplicably got the Flyer, and both loved it. The hardware was solid… almost to a fault. The thing was a brick, but seemed like it could take a beating without skipping a beat. At the very least, that’s a good indication for the build quality for this RT tablet. Still can’t imagine many people buying it though.

When I’m shopping for a car, I want it to drive the way I like my cars to drive. It has to have good steering response, decent power, solid handling, and it has to be fun to drive. If it has a world class navigation system, but doesn’t focus first and foremost on being a fun CAR… I’m not interested. The PS4 sounds more like the kind of car I want to drive than the XB1.

I don’t disagree with you in general, but HTC has done a credible job tuning the Beats output through their external stereo speakers. I should have been more specific. I have no experience with the One through a pair of headphones with the Beats turned on. I just happen to have 2 friends with this phone that I’ve tried the feature out on through the stereo speakers.

I don’t think the point of the article is to say new phones are better than old phones… There’s an angle here you’re not reflecting: Size. People are always saying the size of the iPhone is perfect and bigger makes it worse. This article just says it may not be the case for everyone.
To use your car analogy, I think its more accurate to say Laura loved her 95 Honda Civic because she couldn’t imagine another car that she would enjoy driving more. Let’s say she’s just a JDM fan, whatever. She’s test driven other non-JDMs before, but never felt compelled to own anything other than her Civic. One day, Laura drove her car into the Hudson. Accidentally. Why she was driving so close to the river, nobody knows. Now she needs to borrow a European car, but she’s only really loved JDM. Until she took that loaner Mini on a business trip, that is… Now she realizes she can love cars other than Honda, and in fact can’t see herself driving a Honda again.
The End.

The only thing I would add is that for men, a war is brewing between skinny jeans and large phones. Something’s got to give… But who will win?!?!
Seriously, there’s nothing worse than seeing someone in comically tight jeans try to cram an S3 into their pocket.

Except that on the One, it’s not a gimmick. You’re thinking of the equalizer settings from their previous devices.

Do people even understand what an editorial is? It’s an opinion piece. Why is this concept so hard for people to understand? Laura is writing about an experience she had… I don’t see why people should get mad about it.

The FF series is my Maxim.
