I honestly think people who blame McDonalds for obesity have no idea how people actually eat.
You know all those sit down chain restaurants that people like to make fun of? There’s a reason those are still in business, namely tons of people in the suburbs pack those places almost every night of the week. Most meals at those places make a McDonalds meal look like portion-controlled diet food especially once you consider that waiters at those places are trained to bring people another soda the instant they see an near empty glass on the table.

Not to put words in the poster’s mouth, but I think it comes down to a point we are almost eliminating boredom to the point to where many people no longer just stop, think, and ponder existential questions.
People can seek instant gratification to the point where while people do still love and enjoy many of the pastimes you list, many just consume endless libraries of content without really stopping to cherish content they find truly special.
To quote (possibly misquote) one of Paul’s earlier Offline pieces: “Do you consume content? Or does the content consume you?”
