yes and no… generally to build a well recognized brand you need to invest loads at the beginning, possibly with very little tangible return, and, if your product eventually breaks through (even the gen2 product), you start reaping the rewards
just ask Samsung. They invested a tonne in their Galaxy brand, and yet despite some initial success, it was only with the G2 and particularly G Note and G3 that the brand seriously broke through. Now your average consumer, who often has no idea what Android even means, goes into a store to ask for a Galaxy, and all that marketing starts to look completely different from an ROI point of view…

yep agree 3M is tiny, and by 2/3 prob made up by Surface devices. Yet, I feel the important takeaway from this news is another: 3Mstill amounts to 7.5% of the total tablet market!
in other words, in relatively short period of time, W8 is finally managing tangible inrods in that same tablet computing space that was supposed to forever elude MS. And this despite:
So I wouldn’t call it slow progress: if you go look at android market share figures before the Fire and the <10" segment boom, Android progress was even slower. Then shipments tripled in less than a year once the “cheap, sub <10” tablets" demand was tapped into. If MS plays their card right (and it looks like they are headed that way), they can follow on the same path, reclaim a much higher % of the market, and potentially secure their position in the post-pc era.
I guess if not great news, I’d at least call it a good start…

I wouldnt call zero to 7.5% in 6m, despite limited availability, “any news”… people think it’s good news… because it is.

dude, launch quarter has come and gone, and Q1 ’13 vs Q4 ’12 Lumia nrs only got higher. Also, on its earnings call Nokia said handset availability was constrained by supply, and to expect larger growth for next quarter compared to this (so >25% Q-on-Q growth).
Now if you like to keep your job, that aint stuff you say on an earnings call unless you’re pretty damn confident it will happen.
So, again… haters gonna hate

it’s actually been 6 months of availability. Also, if you do the numbers, Surface accounts for probably about 2/3s of that percentage, and it’s widely known that MS has not been selling Surface RT in retail stores until recently, plus their supply chain issues meant they had TROUBLE getting enough Surface Pro stock at best buy and the likes.
Not to count how the report states clearly (and numerous other sources + anecdotal evidence have confirmed) how W8 tabs have suffered from poor availability…
So much for filling the channel, huh? But we all know, haters gonna hate….

and here we have another one confusing market share and installed base… your statcounter numbers are installed base, and completely worthless for your argument. You really think carriers enjoy ordering time and time again phones and leaving them to languish in the channel.. god.

what makes it less impressive? who cares which brand is selling and which one is not? 7.5% of total shipments in 3 months is still 7.5%…
sure, surface may be doing better than other tablets, but only goes to show that if you release a quality product you may sell more than shittier one (vivo tab, gimped ativ tabs).
Also: most android tablets were widely available and very cheap (and a significant % of ipad sales are now cheapish Minis, too). Not to mention how many mobile carriers tend to give away a cheapo android tab if you sign a new phone contract (seen lots of this in UK & Italy), surely skewing android the numbers a bit. Instead, W8 tabs, including surface, have been crippled until quite recently by limited distribution and much higher average price (even when on sale). With smaller, cheaper <10" tablets on the horizon, the market % only stands to rise…
considering the above, it seems to me like a very decent performance. Also, laptop-first convertibles such as the Yoga arent included either, and I can see in the worst case a few hundred Ks of these also having been sold, boosting the W8 touch numbers further
