The point is that Google started out with this whole open platform thing as a central strategy. Apple has always been ‘closed’ so anyone buying from them knew full well what they were getting into. Google on the other hand started open, now is still talking all about open, but is closing off their services pretty systematically.
In short, the reason no one mentions Apple is because it has nothing to do with them!

But I bet you they sell a few more metric-shit-tonnes of their lower-end phones.

Lest say you’re a lifelong super vocal Windows fan, but one time for a little while you decided to try out Android, but you didn’t like it very much and went back to Windows.
You suddenly become super famous and your old University wants a picture to put up of you for all eternity, and they pick one of you using Android and not Windows, what would all those people to whom you’ve talked to about Windows over and over (and over) think of that?
This isn’t about the fact that whatshername can’t go to the ball dressed up every so often, it’s that this picture is supposed to represent her in Disney cannon for the rest of time, and it’s so far removed from what her actual character is.

I’d love to hear too.
The best that I could find is ‘RemoteControl for Earphones’ which gives you play/pause/skip unless you want to get into 5 or 6 clicking for volume. No volume control support at all on a Nexus 4 with Apple’s older iPhone-included headphones. The app isn’t the prettiest, clearly designed with Android 2.x in mind, but it works and doesn’t have any ads, so it gets a thumbs up. Doing things like double-clicking isn’t nearly as forgiving as it is in iOS, but such is life.
I have to say, again, this is my big Really!?! moment when switching from an iPhone to N4, how can super-basic stuff like this NOT work out of the box!

A big part of iOS’s ‘smoothness’ is that Apple prioritized the user interface (and its smoothness) over features. Android started out prioritizing features. Now Apple has been adding features to it’s OS, and Google has been trying to get Android to run smooth. They are meeting somewhere in the middle.**
