A quick Google search tells me it was actually “Funner”… whatever that means. I guess something about games?

Yes, they could do it, but not as fast. That was the whole point. Simplicity brings speed.
And I’m pretty sure the Lumia wasn’t advertised as being funnier than other phones…

Because simple is good. People like things that they can understand. A phone should not be a status symbol. Who cares how much it costs as long as it does what you need it to? My Titan was the same price as an iPhone 4S when I bought it, but god I wish it was cheaper. I’m not paying for prestige, I’m paying for a phone.
Anyway, what does price have to do with the complexity of the OS? Does a phone do more simply because it costs more? Does complexity demand a higher price?
Windows Phone competes with iOS and Android because it does (almost feature -for-feature) the same things as those OSs do, just in different ways. If you have kept up to date with the Smoked By Windows Phone challenge you’d see that it does them faster too. isn’t that the real mark of a great OS? It lets you do what you want quicker than anything else out there.

Start screen is of better use in Windows Phone, if its not just a tool to glance information but rather as center of every possible communication.
See, right there: clutter. It take a second to launch Facebook or Messages or Email, why is there this burning need to see everything at once rather than seeing the things that are actually important.

1 & 2) That would just be cluttered. There is a reason for the big tiles, they’re easy to see. Even though most will be the same colour scheme, they are easily identifiable. I am somewhat confused about what you’re trying to explain as well… do you want the top half of the screen to be tiles and the bottom half to be an app list? or split it into left and right sides? What do you mean by icons?
4) What controls would you suggest (other than play/pause/ skip for the Zune tile) that would really be necessary?
5) What huge organisation capabilities? Arranging things by file type? Sorting by date added? Those are relevant on that platform, where those things have significance. On a largely locked down OS like WP, it serves little purpose.
It has advanced features. The bare OS itself does more than any other mobile OS. It has deep app integration, and by far the best contact/info management of any OS I’ve used. Those are advanced features.
I’m not saying your ideas will never happen, I’m saying they do not fir with WP7s current philosophy. There’s a mockup floating around the web that shows something closer to what you are describing and it’s a truly scary sight.

I feel like you missed the whole point of the Metro design language. It’s minimalist. It shows what it needs to show and nothing more. I don’t feel like writing an essay on the subject so I’ll just go through your points.
1) Static tiles are fine. What they point of having them update and waste resources just for the sake of it doing extra stuff. It’s not a widget, it’s an icon. I don’t want my IE tile having random notifications for the sake of having them.
2) I guess this would be handy. Things like pictures tile could be made smaller for people who don’t like it there I guess. Although if you really didn’t like it, why not just unpin it in the first place? I don’t see a need to make tiles bigger except for showing more info, which again comes back the fact that they are not widgets.
3) So Tiles are wasting space, but apparently you want more space to waste as well? I get that the slight offset of the start screen seems a little unbalanced for some, but after a little while you don’t even notice it. It is also a fitting visual cue that there is more to explore to the right (which isn’t obvious to everyone).
4) Again, they are not widgets. It sounds more and more like what you are really after is an android phone with a custom ROM.
5) Oh god no, why do you need all the details of an app? I don’t need to see that Whatsapp is xMB and was installed on a meaningless date. It’s an app list, it’s there to launch the apps you don’t use that often. It’s not meant to be exciting, it’s meant to be functional, like a hammer. You don’t use it to look like a suave business man, you use it to get a job done.
It seems from reading your post that you want complexity for the sake of complexity. Metro stands for the exact opposite of that. You get in, get the job done, and get out to continue living your life.

All these fucking bans and injunctions do nothing but hurt the consumer. I’m glad I live in a place that doesn’t succumb to this shit.

Wow dude, you are missing the entire point of the thread. Yes, opinion counts, it matters a great deal, but no one is asking for your opinion. They’re asking for an actual tangible problem you have with Windows 8. You wouldn’t answer a math question with philosophy, so why are you answering this question with opinion?
All that is asked for here is
“I don’t like this because of xyx”, but you insist on responding
“i dnot like this” with no actual justification for why you don’t like it.
you’re allowed to dislike it, all the OP wanted was a reason why.

I’m not saying Windows Phone is beating the iPhone, I’m saying evidence is poor (which it is). iOS on iPad, iPod touch, iPhone are recorded as the same thing, so your source lumps the whole sum together. That’s not a comparison of iPhone vs WP7, it’s iOS vs WP7, which is a very different discussion. Either way, I believe the iPhone is still winning in sales, but your proof is flawed.

Not saying I believe the article, but you’ve got a bit of a flaw in your argument: iPads are not iPhones. nor are iPods. iOS runs on all 3.
