Google Nexus, LG, HTC, Sony, Samsung. With this many companies building on the android platform, Nokia made the correct decision for an OS to give customers a differential on the cell phone market. Windows Phone 8 gives Nokia this and it’s working.

Wp8 is growing but Nokia sold off manufacturing capacity and now it seems to not be able to keep up with demand. These three markets US + India + China by themselves can push manufacturing capacity but together I am sure Nokia do not have capacity to keep up. They need help…

I agree…RT on and Arms chip $250-300 then it will sell like hotcakes. Unfortunately, Microsoft and OEMs had to wait on Intel to develop the chips and soon now that will be accomplished. Consumers will buy Windows 8 tablet and I would rename the RT to lite with the price above and they will sell I’ll bet big time. There are 60,000 apps available for the OS so they will be fine.

Instagram “in it’s own niche” is just an app that does what most all smart phones do is share pictures with contacts or groups using other apps sharing before instagram came on the seen. This is a basic feature I am sure you have more uses for a phone that are important to you even before Instagram. I am not knocking the service at all and have no need to.

Phone cameras are limited in general but do a lot with those limitations compared to an actual camera. I take your point but I think you are on to something that I was considering that the functionalities using phone cameras can be extended to the cloud perhaps with additional sensors built into the phone to collect more data and processed in the cloud returning a true slr image to the phone for viewing. But after so many apps things will have to morph/change technologically. Apple has nearly a million apps who is going to go through that many and how are developers profiting?

I agree to a degree…
But when the number is over a hundred thousand and growing the apps become mostly replicants…some for the better.

Lacking Apps?
This is not an issue…
The issue is not enough phones at price points for the consumer. Not everyone including myself want a two year contract. And still limited carriers… I do not know if Nokia believe there is a demand here in the states because while they are building low cost phones elsewhere very limited # is hitting here in the US and what do come get snatched up right away. Microsoft seems not interested. They could be pushing Dell, HP to build phones as well.

That my problem, it’s going up but the title is saying it slows. And I have been on several sites most time apps are being updated and new apps added. I guess anything for a negative spend. And yes, I think it’s strong app growth as well. Don’t forget Windows 8 simultaneously has 60,000 now for the same kernel. So that’s around 205,000 apps in same time frame.

Well with the update “Blue”, more form factors coming including maybe 7 or 8", new cheaper phones"521 Lumia", but more importantly Intel is almost ready with their new low power chips these may help the eco system quite nicely for Microsoft and partners.

It’s still a short period of time for a new kernel. And Microsoft has a lot of apps on the desktop side that in fact I don’t see a need for them to match app for app with either Apple or Android.

Windows 8 competitors are within it’s on camp. Windows 7 and XP. Windows 8 may not be enticing enough to move from 7 which is still growing. I expect Windows 8 to two are more updates before consumers consider making the upgrade. And I think this is a good thing for us consumers because it forces Microsoft to have to prove why the OS they want folks to upgrade too is better than 7 which is a top graded OS..

I don’t understand. In windows7 I go get calculator or an item in system tools the menu expands across the screen actually three quarters just to get there and this is true even in windows xp. So that is no different than what the start screen’s doing when getting a program. The only way I see workflow not being interrupted is by pinning all programs likely to be used/needed for the task being done.

Because of Active Desktop that was around for quite some time I thought for non touch devices this was the solution for those of us who want to use apps from the store. Then tablets, phones, and hybrids"which expands the selection of hardware" this would work for the OEMs.

Microsoft is attempting a change on the scale that GM refuse to do without being forced and that is adapting who they are and their products. Balmer and Microsoft is getting bash for making changes that will help them adapt and be in this game in the future. And yes there is a dead period for Microsoft and some of it’s products until Intel delivers on some of their new chips something out of Microsoft control simply all they can do is wait but waiting period is almost over and those Haswell chips built in products will spark an up turn for Microsoft and should carry on for some time. New form factors for tablets, a new medfield chip for phones" If Samsung is bold they might build the first Windows RT phone". I do not believe they need to match app for app and should keep an sizable store but a smaller collection could mean a better quality selection.

But since when does Arm chips run legacy software ? or do it but I did not know they did. And if Arm chips do not run legacy why is RT expected to. RT to my knowledge was built to run on Arm chips.

I love not having to go dig through sub menus that stretch across the desktop. And I think Microsoft should for non touch devices leave the organization of the start menu bottom left like it always has with control panel, etc., but keep the modern UI. It’s much more easier and I like the way you can organize and even pen folders there that you can put in groups,to say the least. However, apps are loading much slower than desktop items and this need to be address. I am like 70/30 internet to desktop at this point so I find the UI desirable. My wish though was that Microsoft got “Active Desktop” working for the apps, or use AD for non touch pc/lap configurations. I know AD is an old idea but it’s still in my opinion a good idea and I think the technology is available to it successful.

Starting with Haswell and later chips, Windows on Arms may become extinct. I believe the new atom chips comes in dual and quad cores as well. These chips do not have to equal Arms lower power but decent enough of a day after all it is running a full OS that can run legacy.

Surface is really a cliche device at this stage but everything is about to change with new Intel chips design for this change in OS. So the waiting is just about over and manufacturing will ramp up with more devices than probably we have uses for. That is a lot of licenses sold already with competing Windows 7 and even XP still holding a major share of the market. So change should expectedly be slow but that is ok. Intel is Microsoft major partner with AMD the minor and the manufacturers now can develop mobile devices and designs more importantly using Windows 8/. These new designs may also include Windows Phones perhaps running the full OS or at least RT on an Intel chip which would be very interesting progress. Haters may just be scared because IntelMicrosoft can really dominate. We now see Nokia selling the 521 phones here in the states and actually selling out for around $150. On the mid to low end markets with decent supplies in the chain windows can mount a serious challenge to Android in this space and especially in tablets.Acer right now seems to be pushing into this space.

@JBean, I have to agree. I upgrade from XP on my laptop which is 5 years old and it is faster than when I bought new from Dell and if you add the smart phone to the equation and soon tablets once Intel releases it’s processors now in development pc will further fall but more or less morph into a new style device. All the complaints so far about Windows 8 are really minor for it’s first iteration. Speaking about morphing… Intel can’t be too far away from a processor for phones…so how about Windows RT phone with Intel chips. Nokia sold off some of it’s manufacturing which I think now they may be regretting.

@wackyanimation, I think your right. Intel became a powerhouse of a company with partner Microsoft and for them to look to Arms for processors will be a major if not galactic hit on Intel. And personally I don’t think Microsoft should have put their OS on Arms anyway. I say this because of the fast"tick-tock" pace that Intel is on I mean our pcs do last a lot longer starting with XP OS than previous generations and I think this is a major factor as to why pc shipments went down. I have a 5 year old laptop that runs like new with windows 8. Microsoft is making $ on the software side while the hardware partners are losing a bit. Can you imagine an Intel chip in a phone with windows. This could send Arms running for cover.

Microsoft should have kept the Desktop with it’s improvements Win8 Desktop/Laptop, then Tablets/Hybrid configurations would be the new add-in, and then of course WP8. The apps could have been in and overlay or integrated into the desktop for a seamless experience because it’s the same code just port to X86 optimization. Microsoft tried to do way too much too soon. Companies are still going to use desktops and I don’t it’s very comfortable reaching up to a screen in the workplace is comforting. Replacing the desktop may take some time for both industry and consumers.
