Thanks for pointing this out, cmmnder312. You’re right, the Apollo 17 astronauts did indeed travel 22 statute miles, the 19.3 was the value of nautical miles traveled, which was not the appropriate point of comparison. Should be fixed in the story now, thanks!

Actually, it’s a great question, and there’s a good answer: much advanced technology goes into drilling in the Arctic, specifically in terms of equipment and systems needed to weather the harsh environment. This story doesn’t focus on any of that, but rather the environmental and political disputes associated with this petroleum development.
