It’s something we are aware of and actively working on. The biggest issue here is the sheer size and number of the images. We’ve been tweaking our compression methods to find the right balance of format, size and quality in order to get the page load size down.

Really excellent piece. It’s easy to forget is the sheer ridiculousness of the videos and buzzwords, but these people are preying on the uninformed and doing all they can to ruin their lives by stealing their money. It’s shame that litigation on them is just about impossible right now.

- In terms of technology choice / things that have been more work, it’s worth pointing out that Chorus started about 5 years ago as a way of converting a couple dozen sports blogs that ran on Scoop to a single platform. Rails was very young then, but it made sense then, and I think it still does now. Everything since then has been a very iterative process of adding and refining features that we saw a need for.
That said, Chorus has been steadily growing to become a large project over time. Rails has a lot of facilities that make working on something of this size easier, but, we bump into scaling/configuration issues fairly often. A good example of this is Rails never really anticipated one app to run across 300+ domains, but that’s what we do.
Sure there are things we would do different if we started with a blank slate, but generally these are areas we’ve already identified as technical debt and are either actively working to improve or have plans to do so.
- Whenever we start a new project, the product team takes a good look at the technologies that make the most sense for the job. For example, our new fantasy baseball game, Pick6 uses MongoDB as it’s datastore. In general, all the developers are big Ruby fans though, so that is our go to.
- Yes, the Apache to Nginx switch is one of the many things on our Ops teams board of projects.
Obligatory mention: If this stuff is up your alley, we are hiring designers, developers and ops people: http://jobs.voxmedia.com/

We’ve talked about this a little in the forums before, but Chorus is a large Rails application with a few service layers to it. Some specific technologies we use:
- MySQL as the general database
- Sass (for stylesheets)
- MemCache
- Apache (not ideal, in the process of switching this out)
- jQuery for various front end things
- Redis (and Resque) for keeping track of stuff and asynchronous jobs
- Solr for searching/querying for certain things
- StatsD for internal data/graphs
- Unicorn as our Rails server

Pop up surveys are definitely something we do not want on our site, and will actively work to remove. Unfortunately due to the complicated world of online ad sales, we can’t always prevent them from occurring, but we do our best. If you see one, please contact support@theverge.com with details and we’ll take care of it.

This is a really interesting project. I clicked through on all the links, but didn’t see any examples of the maps they created or how protesters use this. Anyone know where this could be found?

This is what the flagging tools are for – a way for the community to moderate itself. Replying to troll comments and counter flaming is not effective, but signaling that something needs administrator attention is.

Flagging inappropriate comments is the best way to combat this kind of problem. The more people that use this tool to signal what they think detracts from the community, the more effective it is.

Although it is true our RSS feeds only contain 10 items at a time, most RSS readers, like Google Reader, will watch it over time and compile it. What kind of problem is the 10 item limit causing you?

Currently, the member profile solution that you mentioned is the only way to do this. Obviously, this isn’t a perfect solution. Implementing a top notch notification system is in our roadmap, but it’s a big project that is going to take time to design, build, test and polish to perfection.
