I’m quite sure a couple of good WP developers can build a YouTube app from scratch in a month and maintain it in an ongoing basis. What is that going to cost for Google? Peanuts.

Google is originally a services company which has became a product company with Android and its other hardware products(Nexus). Most of all the services which Google built is based of open internet standards. Now Google is caught in a situation where it has to let go of some openness to give an edge to its own hardware products. Now Google has to decide what it wants to do, go the openness route and be a purely services company or sacrifice openness in favor of its hardware products. It looks increasingly like they are going for the second.

Exactly, so Google shouldn’t portray themselves as saints and other competitors as evil. They make more money off your info than they let you to believe. In the end its a business, so be up front and disclose what’s happening with your data behind the scenes.
