That doesn’t appear to be a service API or protocol doc that would allow writing a client, it’s just an API for automating the official client when it’s been installed.

The idea is there aren’t “two UIs”, there’s just one Windows UI and the desktop is a feature of that UI (not a separate “mode” or “environment”).

The idea is that instead of closing the app you just use the top left corner to go back to the previous app (the desktop in this case) and let the system deal with managing the lifetime of apps. Does this not work for you?

(Originally there wasn’t even meant to be any way of closing the new apps at all other than Task Manager, but they added the close gesture as a response to feedback).

Because they don’t expect you to close apps several dozen times a day. Normally you don’t close apps at all and the system manages the process lifetime (suspend, hibernate, etc.), manually closing an app is just for when it’s misbehaving or maybe you want to hide it for whatever reason. I close WinStore apps maybe once a day.

What does that have to do with the desktop specifically? Getting back to apps or Start from the desktop works exactly the same as getting back to apps or Start from another app, so I’d think if you could get stuck in the desktop you’d also get stuck in any other app … ?
