I think you’re forgetting the fact that elsewhere in the world, Nokia is able to sell more N9 than Lumia 800 devices. Yes, Nokia is making it big in the US after so long but the US is but a small market compared to the rest of the world. In some countries, you can sell anything with a Nokia logo on it. I think the only reason Nokia was seen as a failure by the tech world is because technology oriented sites are usually based in the US.
Compared to Symbian at this stage, I can understand why Microsoft chose to go with WP7 but all this speculation about WP8 and its effect on the mobile market is just that: speculation. If you have held an N9, you would see why a lot of Nokia fans have turned against Elop. Meego Harmattan is one of the most polished OS released and it definitely is a good alternative to Symbian. Hell, its even more usable than Wp7 but Elop decided to go with Microsoft, discard Meego and sell Symbian devices on the low-end. Meego, like webOS, has been abandoned and both represent what could’ve been. Read the N9’s reviews and you’ll see that even journalists have seen the potential behind Meego. Even the N9’s release was intentionally crippled by Nokia. They only released it on select markets and offered it at a relatively high price. It would’ve been nice if Nokia decided to keep Meego and relegated it to mid tier.
