You’re still ignoring the fact that they’ve removed calling from gmail if you upgrade to hangouts, which for your average user is how they’re going to make their calls. Yes there are workarounds but there’s no certainty that any of them will work long term.

You also can’t receive calls in gmail anymore if someone dials your google voice number,
