What are you talking about? My point was that if you are going to say the Chromebook Pixel deserves a 7.5 when compared to other Chromebooks then you need to do the same with every other review. Don’t compare Surfaces to MacBook Airs, only compare them to other Win8 ultrabooks. Don’t compare the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the iPhone 5, only compare it to other Android phones. Etc.

The point being made here is that The Verge staff have a deep love and appreciation for Apple & Google and thus when reviewing a bizarre product like the Pixel they give it a good score but when reviewing a really nice product like the Kirabook they are highly critical of it’s flaws. The flaws in the Chromebook are primarily due to the first party software which should be a bigger drag on a device’s score. The flaws in the Kirabook are, outside of the obsession with the non-Apple-ness of the device’s keyboard and trackpad, primarily related to 3rd party software which neither Toshiba or MS have direct control of.

The explanation given for the discrepancy is that the limitations of the Pixel are due to the OS and will be worked out over time. There is this built-in allowance on any Google product because they iterate their software over time. The exact same could be argued for Windows Phone, a new OS in an established market backed by a major player who is content to take losses while building the platform. Unfortunately, The Verge staff don’t give MS the benefit of the doubt like they do for Google.

And we’re just saying that we don’t believe your story. I work in IT at a college campus with a bunch of professors and students who are technologically agile and none of them no what a chromebook is. We’ve had numerous users asking to get Surfaces but none asking for Chromebooks.

This is the real point here, if you are going to silo laptops/notebooks by OS then you should do the same with smartphones and tablets. What would the score be for the Nokia Lumia 920 or the Samsung Galaxy S4 if they were compared against only other Windows Phones & Andoid phones? What would be the use of such comparisons? The iPhone redefined the smartphone market and every phone made since has been reviewed in light of it and compared to it. Review numbers should also expire or require periodic updates as the market changes. That would be interesting to follow.
