I’ve been using CodeCademy, and found it pretty good. Just a matter of making sure not to slack off and stop doing lessons so you keep everything fresh in your head.

The Wirecutter just did a piece on this. I’m looking at picking it up because I have a bunch of stuff split across multiple drives and want something with Thunderbolt.

There may not be others like me, but I enjoy these pieces because I get really into bags and whatnot. I like seeing how other people carry their stuff around — even if they have similar things, they always have different bags. Plus, seeing how many people still read off of paper or keep a notebook with them is neat.

Very good point. They do very much lack any creativity. And while they do serve to support the post-Jobs decline idea, it has to be remembered that Apple itself doesn’t produce ads. Granted, they do approve them — but Jobs himself expressed disgust for the “Think Different” ads prior to release.

I’ve used both the paid versions of Rdio and Spotify. I can say that hands down, Rdio was better.
Their libraries were a tad different, and I can’t speak for your taste, but I was satisfied with both. However, the big difference for me was ease of use and design. Spotify is really poorly designed (especially on mobile) and seems more based on typing in a song and then playing it, as opposed to building a collection. Rdio really seems based on around discovery and library building.
One of my favorite features was how Rdio will scan your library and add any songs it has in common with what you have to your Rdio account. This is really useful if you want to use the mobile app — you don’t have to store anything locally or add everything to your collection. Spotify will play local files through the Mac app but not the iPhone app.
That, together with the fact that Rdio just looks a lot nicer and never crashed on me (Spotify did frequently), really made the choice easy. I tried Spotify paid at launch and a week or two ago, and signed up for Rdio about two weeks ago. The choice was easy.

I would first try to avoid using full screen apps. Inexperienced users could become confused if they were unable to find, say, Safari, because it had been opened and full screen and is hidden. I would also make sure not to try to teach anything that is “unnecessary.” For example, show someone how to resize windows, but don’t show them the green “+” button at the top of a window (does anyone know what that is anyways?).
I don’t think it’s about the set-up as much as it is about teaching your father about concepts as they come up, so he isn’t overwhelmed. Granted, there isn’t much you can do about how wonky Lion can prove to be.

Agreed on the first point. While I don’t use Flash myself it would really confuse most if they didn’t have it installed.

I do the same, with the exception of the NY Times. The websites feel “lighter” than the apps — especially on older iPads and iPhones.

“I don’t know what that means.”
“Say ‘what’ again. Say ‘what’ again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say what one more Goddamn time!”
Yeah, I think Jules would’ve been better than just Jackson.

Agreed. I sprang for the 64 and filled it about halfway. While I like having the extra space, I think I could certainly make do with 32 — but not with 16. Glad I use iTunes Match either way, though.
