I can unabashedly say this album is the reason I decided to become a musician. I was visiting friends one night, they were watching a movie and I decided to hang back, put on some headphones, and listen to a copy of The Downward Spiral sitting around. I had NEVER heard such intense sound design, instruments, or expressions before. I practically dedicated my life to sound design and electronic music after that experience. Ended up studying it in college. Years later I won The Social Network remix contest and was able to have lunch with Reznor, which inspired me to, once and for all, finally pursue a serious music career. Thanks Reznor.
Ha. I probably can’t say much about this but I saw Keifer taking a smoke break outside my office building some months ago. He had tracking nodes all over his face. We exchanged hellos.
It’s somewhat generational. NIN represented a kind of technologically focused, aesthetic during the 90s. There were not many mainstream acts that did that at the time. Reznor is/was an obvious techy of some kind. People during that period have grown up work in the industry (including myself). So we talk about NIN.
There was this strange issue that occurred once when I was using Hulu. A new set of options in the interface appeared below a video. It stated that I needed to identity which cable subscription service I am using in order to view the video. This video, moments earlier, was available for me to watch. In fact I use Hulu+ so I assumed there was no problem. People started complaining in the comments beneath. Maybe several hours later, the item on this specific page, was removed. The video was available again. I think they posted it on accident and later denied that they had any plans of requiring cable subscription to watch videos online.
The point being, they’re obviously going to require a cable subscription to watch videos online in due time.
