I don’t have any specific recommendations, but I would avoid anything with Nvidia graphics. Nvidia’s Windows drivers are notorious for causing DPC latency, which hurts your ability to record audio at low latency without clicks and pops. AMD graphics tend to be less of a problem, but I’d go with something that has Intel integrated graphics for the battery life if you don’t plan on gaming with it.
By the way, I’m not anti-Nvidia by any stretch. It’s just that their graphics drivers happen to affect this one particular use case in an adverse way.

The weird resolution is so existing apps that are made for 960×640 can run unmodified without scaling. They can just use the upper portion of the screen.

Why? If they simply extend the screen, existing apps can run unmodified and simply not use the bottom portion. They won’t be scaled in any unnatural way. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll be a lot better than how the iPad manages iPhone apps (for example). Apple’s good at getting developers to update their apps for whatever they change anyways. I wouldn’t worry.

If you’re on a model with integrated graphics, Ivy Bridge should be sufficient for anything that isn’t gaming.
Both Nvidia and AMD really stepped up their game with their recent mobile GPUs, so I don’t think that will be a huge issue either (although you won’t be using max settings at native resolution).
Keep in mind that you can still use 1440×900 for games if you need to. It won’t look amazing, but it won’t look awful either.

It’s not even as good as last year’s model. A shame, really.

So there’s absolutely no reason (barring maybe the IR blaster) to get this over the Transformer Pad 300, which costs the same and kills it in performance.

My guess is to attract the legions of Evo 4G owners who are nearing the end of their two year contracts. You and I know that this phone doesn’t really have much in common with that one (aside from being a high end HTC phone on Sprint), but to your average buyer it presents a logical upgrade path.

I was working on something similar for Windows Phone 7 a little more than a year ago, but I stopped because real life got in the way and WP7 continued to underwhelm (especially in the marketing department – didn’t seem worth spending the time/money on a game that would seemingly reach no one).
I guess great minds think alike. :)

I think Nintendo’s recent failings have far more to do with a poorly marketed and initially poorly priced console (the 3DS) and an insanely popular console that reached a saturation point and the end of its life cycle (the DS/DS Lite/DSi/etc.) than with the rise of the iPhone.
The 3DS’ sales are on the rise after an extremely poor launch and people will continue to buy it for the Nintendo essentials (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, etc.). Putting Pokemon Black and White Version 2 on the DS was a huge mistake in that regard, though.
And of course the iPhone sells far more units than the DS/3DS/etc. – it’s a multi-function device that belongs to a much larger market segment than portable video game consoles.
I think it’s just a little bit early to ring the death knell for Nintendo. But hey, everyone needs to write a click bait article sometimes, right?
