Consumption of “jungle meats” in Africa is a huge concern also. Watch the British documentary called “Monkey Business” and you will understand that there are lots of viruses in the jungle that are just waiting to jump to humans. To understand how viruses evolve you need to learn how to create them before you can stop them. I think this type of research is needed. Biological safety is already a well undertstood and established protocol. But anything can go wrong. Would you rather not look for a solution and just be bombarded by the viruses? Just because one Shuttle exploded does not mean we should stop space exploration.
