Indie developers consist of more than just the quick-made gameplay-knock-off or “social casual” style games you see on iOS. Indie developers aren’t just the basement-project teams with a studio name slapped on their bedroom door [which do sometimes produce some valuable gems such as Super Meat Boy, Antichamber, Fez,] — there are a lot of small development studios that fall under this indie title as well. Some recent games that come to mind (personally) by small devs include Orcs Must Die (1 & 2,) Sanctum (1 & 2,) Hotline Miami, Kentucky Route Zero, and the upcoming title Transistor.
Smaller indie devs like this are crucial for the continued success of gaming. If they aren’t supported, then the studios will die out and we’ll only be left with the mega-publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision making every single game you’ll ever play.
