Yeah. But it lags the notification centre scrolling quite hard – iPad 2 here, so hardware shouldn’t be the problem. Gonna give NCSettingd a try, thanks for the tip.

Talented person != alpha person
Judging from what I’ve read so far, Ive seems to be the last person who would want to run that place.

This. All this crap about finders keepers. And as an employee of said location you’re doubly bound to this law, probably even by a section in his work contract.

Where did you get that version of the story from? The guy? The phone? Out of thin air?

Well, sometimes people are just out of luck. Like I couldn’t use my battered-yet-beloved office keyboard anymore when I bought a new laptop in 2003 – no PS/2 connector…

A good theoretical read on that topic would be Chapter two (The Vocabulary of Comics) in Scott MCCloud’s Understanding Comics. He explains how the different stages of abstraction (from symbol to photo-realistic) can be used to achieve certain effects and emotions. Sure, the book is mainly aimed at comics and their techniques but his theories hold true for most of modern UI design.

This.
On top, especially on the iPad, skeuomorphism adds a level of familiarity for the user. Granted, I’m not a computer newbie in any sense, but the always full-screen nature of iOS in combination with its fast-app-switching sometimes leaves me wondering for a second, what app I’m in at the moment (even more so when using the multi-finger gestures to switch apps). The often hated upon stitched leather of the calendar app or other skeuomorphisms in other apps help me orientate more quickly after the switch. And if this is true for a tech nerd, it surely is even more for the average Joe using iOS. After all, I don’t consider myself the prime target group for Apple.
