Except none of the above. Swartz and geohot both actually hacked – as in, they broke through some layer of security to access private (read: digitally secured) data. These guys didn’t have to do that, because this stuff was publicly accessible. You could access it by typing a URL into your browser. All they did was automate the process. It’s like using the DownThemAll extension.

I mean, the real frustrating thing here (and yeah, I know it’s been covered before) is that text messaging prices are completely detached from reality. The SMS standard was developed to piggyback on data packets your phone has to send as part of the MAP protocol. There is no additional burden on the cellular infrastructure (MMS is a different story). So, the carrier is charging you – sometimes on a per-text basis – for something that costs them literally nothing.

I mean, they’re only stingy if you think streaming revenue should be anywhere near comparable to sales revenue. Which it probably shouldn’t, since a sale is essentially a license to use the song in perpetuity for a one-time fee, while a stream only counts as a single use. You can’t compare the two.

There are non-analog ways to do it (I use SoundFlower to record podcasts sometimes). But yeah, you have to record in real-time. I think it’s cool though – it reminds me of waiting to tape something on the radio.
Ugh. I’m old.
