“HP Envy vs. Apple Envy” doesn’t exist in this reality – what apparently exists is HP’s envy of Apple. :/
I am sick and tired of OEMs’ laziness in taking the easy way out by caving to Apple’s design language, and giving up on their own design philosophies. HP has had one of the better, eye catching design styles with curvy plastics and wild art for consumer, and slate black, shape-pressed metallic (neat boxy design, akin to Chromebook Pixel) for business.

Indeed. Just the two laptops with keyboards, nbd! No way they’d be confused by customers walking in Best Buy.
[Customer thinking:] “Hm, should I buy HP Macbook or Apple Macbook? Decisions, decisions.”

According to RIAA’s own report for 2011-2012 YoY, digital music downloads were up (in both singles and albums), only revenues were down. Your title reads “..downloads dwindling..”, which is misleading.
You may want to change it to “..growth dwindling..” because downloads are definitely not dwindling.

No.
Only the playback time on videos is capped. You can still upload/download videos of any length as long as they’re <1GB in size.

What are you talking about, “servicing the low-end market”? They still sell $1000+ machines with 1366×768 panels that have dull, washed out colors and/or tinting. All you have to do is take a look at HP’s, Acer’s, or Dell’s consumer websites..
Also, many people “don’t care” because they don’t know what they’re missing. Then they take these lo-res machines home, attempt to read on them, and that gives them eyestrain and headaches. They then come away disappointed and with a conclusion that “computers are bad for reading”.
Point is, by upgrading the display (resolution, color vibrancy/fidelity) that automatically, and noticeably, upgrades the entire computing experience, whereas that isn’t necessarily true for other components such as CPU/GPU, RAM, HDD, etc.. on which most OEMs currently place emphasis.

I’ve worked on an assembly line, and it is a b*tch of a job. It is monotonous and back pain inducing. For that reason, many of them have already been automated and/or outsourced. Shelving, construction, and teaching/lecturing, while demanding in their own ways, are not analogous because those jobs actually exercise (i.e. allow to stretch and contract, repeatedly) many muscle groups – not just putting constant tension on one group for hours, which can be hazardous.
Anyhow, the point is: when comparing “Minority Report UI” to real life UIs, the former (i.e. the UI itself – not the “precog foreknowledge” technology) has zero advantage over the latter, from both usability and functionality perspective. If you think about what the UI actually accomplishes in the film – it merely searches for, and displays the culprit’s name, future criminal action(s), as well as a bunch of images of the surrounding setting. All this can be done faster and more efficiently with a bunch of windows open, using a keyboard and mouse, rather than flailing your arms and waiting for a machine to print a shiny wooden ball.

I was talking specifically about things like “Minority Report UI”, which, besides looking cool, offer little usability improvement over real-life UI. Star Trek communicators are a different story. They actually were a massive improvement (albeit imaginative) of a technology (i.e. landline telephones, and handheld transceivers) we had at the time.

This! What people don’t seem to understand is that the “Minority Report UI” would be supremely impractical in day-to-day use. Imagine standing with your arms outstretched in front of you for 7hrs a day, 5 days a week, in a normal workday scenario. We’ll all have to become olympic class athletes to be able to use that UI. Hell, many people get tired sitting behind their desks, typing for several hours, and that is with their palms resting on the table.
