I made a similar post on The Verge Forums. Personally I blame Wall St. and CEOs. They are afraid of innovation. They are happy with the status quo because they make more money that way. It’s expensive to innovate. Unfortunately the customer is the one who suffers.

Form factor was really important for my build. I tried to make it fit in a relatively small space under my desk, but I didn’t want to sacrifice performance too much. I found this sweet microATX Silverstone case with lots of ventilation and it only has a depth of 12"
As for the rest of my build (Summer 2010):
CPU: Intel Core i5-750
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX
HDD: 2x Western Digital Velociraptor 300gb (Raid 0)
Ram: 8gb (4×2gb) Gskill DDR3 1600 Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ
PSU: SeaSonic 520W M12II
VGA: XFX Radeon 5770 1gb
5.25 internal DVD reader/writer
Rose will PCI wireless adapterI fit all this in a case measuring only 5.91"H x 17.32"W x 12.72"D !! And I have a mild overclock to 3.0GHz. Everything stays cool, too.
