I think Leo was way more destructive. I cannot encounter the phrase “old sport” anymore without having a gag reflex.

Not sure what Microsoft really lost a chance at… the opportunity to spend $5,000,000 to give out free copies of an album? Let’s face it—no one is going to go and buy a Galaxy (or would have bought a Windows Phone) just so that they can get a Jay-Z album a few days early.
I’d argue that what MS has done with Pandora is actually better—free ad-free streaming till the end of the year. While people may not buy a phone just for that, I think MS should have made a much bigger deal about it.

To a company manufacturing things, it doesn’t really matter if people want or need something if they’re buying it, which they are doing with the iPad.

Which is > the 1 person who can play the disc-based game on PS4.

The PS4 allows you to trade and resell your physical disks just like you did before, because it is the same system as before. Publishers can go out of their way to keep you from doing so however. On the Xbox, you can’t sell/trade your games as you wish, as it’s tied to your accounts, but some games can be traded/resold if the publisher goes out of their way to do so.
Do you think multi-platform publishers will go with the DRM restriction on one platform and not on the other, just because it is easier on one platform versus the other? I think it is pretty unlikely, especially for big publishers or developers who port from one platform to the other.

Ironically, the iPad is a counterpoint to your first argument. When the iPad was released, no one wanted a new way to interact with apps or the web. They just wanted better phones or better computers. Apple created a new market with the touch-based tablet.

Doesn’t really affect me or anyone else on subscription music service. The only album I’ve bought since I started paying for subscription music was Random Access Memories, which was a silly purchase since the digital subscription version was available the same day.

I currently have a Surface RT and a laptop for x86 needs. Don’t have any third device that is not my phone.
Depending on how the Surface Pro 2 looks, I’m going to consider replacing my Vaio and RT with that + Type Cover.

Not to mention that MS expects this to be the platform for the next decade. Trends certainly suggest that internet should be nearly ubiquitous by then.

Too many people lack the empathy to be able to put themselves into the body of a no tech savvy, non tech blog reading, non hacker / modder person and see that they will have issues down the line that you could circumvent because A. you saw it coming and B. you know what tools are available to you.
I really don’t think I need to have empathy for people who don’t take the time to understand the $500 device they are buying. Also, I’m not an MSFT shareholder so it personally does not matter to me if xyz people buy or don’t buy their product as long as it fits my use cases.

You managed to type a lot of words without actually saying anything.
I don’t know why you brought up company executives at all—that really had nothing to do with anything. We were discussing if the general public were aware of what Android was and you really didn’t say anything to convince me that they are.
Android users know what Android is, and that its connected to Google. They tend to think of their phone as being “a Samsung”, but they know its connected to Google, that it has “their apps”.
Maybe after they rebranded their marketplace to Google Play people make that connection more. But I still think it’s far from the majority opinion.
Ironically, I think MS has developed brand recognition for Windows Phone because all their commercials mention Windows Phone specifically and in an elevated manner, which I don’t believe any of the Android manufacturers do. I’ve had random people ask me what phone I use and I tell them it’s a “Nokia Lumia”. A lot of them then ask, “Oh is that the Windows Phone?” So I guess the commercial has served the purpose of creating WP brand recognition.

They aren’t irrelevant. His point was that even if Nokia had been making their own OS, they’d still be producing features at the same rate, so MS shouldn’t be held responsible for features not getting to Nokia faster than they were before (because they actually aren’t getting there slower).

Right, but at the same time it is silly/unlikely for someone to snuff out a third-party app and not provide an official app unless your name is Google.

You know, this may actually be a good idea for an app, as long as it keeps it updated. It would be valuable for new people to the platform who don’t know the WP8 named third-party version of a popular network.

I think his OS argument went over your head.
His argument were that people were complaining that MS’ slow iteration of the OS software is what’s holding Nokia back whereas Nokia itself had a history of slow OS software iteration.

You KNOW you have an “Android by Google” if you DONT have an iPhone.
Actually, onedrummer2401 is right about the general population not knowing what Android is. I’ve asked non-tech people—friends or just random people I meet—who have a smartphone that looks different since it isn’t an iPhone or WP. I ask them, “Oh, is that an Android?”. They say, “Huh, no. It’s a Motorola/Samsung/etc.”. Android itself has no brand recognition outside of nerds/geeks. Samsung/HTC have presumably done all they can to get rid of Google branding as much as they can, as well. So unless you have a Nexus, I think it’s safe to assume that you may not know what an Android is, if you’re a member of the general population.
When people go to the store, and see “Oh, this is Windows, its not an iPhone and its not like Android either, it doesnt have any of the apps….but you can have Office!” its made clear.
Again, you live in a fantasy world where you think everyone is technologically literate. You’re more likely to see something like, “Oh, does it do Facebook and Instagram?” than anything else. If you have a consumer actually walk into the shop with an open mind (or ignorance) it is up to the sales rep to push them in a certain direction and they’re probably making the largest cut with an iPhone.

Also, I do find it odd that it’s mostly only WP that come in a wide variety of colors. Perhaps its to appeal to a younger demographic such that they “grow up” with WP, generating future loyalty? If so, it’s a bold strategy that I’m curious to see if it’ll pan out.
I think colors came out to make it look different from the iPhone, and also because they went with polycarbonate over metal, which allowed them to be more creative. Also the fact that the devices were built ruggedly enough that you didn’t have to cover them up with a case which hid the color anyway.

I think you should technically still be able to open enough apps to kick the hung app out of the fast resume list. But that’s still a shitty workaround.
I’d actually prefer the ability to close apps over a notification center.
